Are you one of those who eagerly gets in the spirit (and dresses for the theme)? Or do you "ain't got time for none of that nonsense?"
I have to say that a great thing about themed races is that they draw a lot of participants to the start line. Many participants are people who may not have been interested if it was just a typical road race. Even though some participants may not know all the appropriate race etiquette, it's awesome that they're there, supporting the cause and being active.
I have been running for more than 14 years, and have done a fair share of themed races. Care to hear a bit about a few of my favorites? Read on...
I think the first themed race I ever ran was the Red Flannel Run (Des Moines, IA). Usually held on the Saturday before Valentines Day, it features both a 5K and a 5-mile route. As one can guess, February in Iowa is usually cold, which actually adds to the fun of the event. The majority of participants come dressed in various forms of red flannel or, at the very least, red clothing. There's a plethora of red plaid shirts, pajamas, hats and shorts. There's even a guy who has shown up a few times in a stylish red plaid jacket (with matching pants). I have run the 5-mile race seven different times, only missing it in 2014 (when one of our daughters' dance competition conflicted with race day). This year, they omitted the 5-mile route, and added a mini tri option (the swimming took place inside the Wellmark YMCA, the staging area for the event). Not being a huge fan of the 5K distance, and given the fact we were still entertaining polar vortex temps, I took a pass.
Another race that I have done several times (the past five years, in fact) is the Leprechaun Chase (also in Des Moines, IA). This is a most unique event...it's a 10K distance, but there are two different starting corrals...one for the lasses (the gals) and the other for the lads (the guys). The lasses get a 5-minute head start, and the lads cross the start line five minutes later. Whomever crosses the finish line first is rewarded a free green beer for herself (or himself) and everyone else of their gender. No surprise, this race is held every year on the weekend before St. Patrick's Day, so the majority of the runners are dressed in all kinds of green (as they should be, right?).
Anyways, that's my take on themed races. I think they're a worthwhile endeavor.
What are your thoughts? Have you ever done a themed race? If so, did you dress according to the theme?

I'm afraid I'm a party pooper when it comes to costumes, but not for themed races. I've done our Last Run many times (Christmas themed with fireworks), one Jingle Bell (the stars haven't aligned for that one since), a few St. Pattys day.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a Valentines themed race since it's my birthday, but there isn't in these parts. They need a chocolate themed race here!
Well, my birthday is March 14th, so I usually have a St. Patty's race to do ;-) One year, the actual race was on my birthday...we did the 10K, drove home, and then ran an additional 3.14 miles, because, why not?
DeleteYou know ?I love a themed race, especially holiday races! People in my area don't really go "all out" when it comes to dressing out, so I normally stick out like a sore thumnb but I don't care :)
ReplyDeleteI am always surprised when we get to a themed event, and some people aren't even dressed in the colors. I get that costumes can be cumbersome (I've tried running in a tutu before, and they are a pain), but at least wearing the colors (like on the 4th of July) is easy-peasy LOL
DeleteI love the themed races as well! It's so much more fun to dress up and enjoy the holiday. You do a great job with your themed outfits
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deborah! Yes, it is fun to dress up (within reason) for the fun races ;-)
DeleteI think these are fun, although we don't seem to get so many over here - there are jingle bell jogs/Christmas pudding runs and I seem to recall an Easter run for chocolate this year. Of course we also seem to like to dress up in costumes just for any old race here in the UK - although is that changing now? I know we had the reputation for that, above our European and EU compadres.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fun to get in the spirit and dress for the occasion, even it's just as simple as wearing festive colors that coordinate with the theme. Why not? Not every race needs to be an all-out "race." ;-)
DeleteI'm not that into the themed races but I do like a good costume here and there. I may match the color of the theme, but that's about it!
ReplyDeleteHey, going with the color theme is great! I often times (secretly) roll my eyes at the ones who show up all decked out in black (or an obscure random color) at the Leprechaun Chase or one of the holiday-themed races LOL
DeleteThe holiday races always look fun but I don't think I've ever done one! I did do a costume party half marathon once, dressed in costume of course, and I really enjoyed it. I love seeing what everyone else is wearing.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's fun to see what everyone else is wearing. Some people really get creative!
DeleteI wish we had more themed races here...the last one we had was a traditional wear...meaning running wearing a saree a.k.a nine yard...
ReplyDeleteAll of these races look so fun. I haven't done too many themed races. Next weekend I am racing the CHaD Hero where everyone dresses up like superheroes and it benefits the Children's Hospital which is cool.
ReplyDeleteI love themed races. They are so much fun and bring so much extra to the run. My favorite part is how many people come out to participate, especially people who might otherwise not sign up for a run.
ReplyDeleteI have done some theme races! I usually dress up a little, but really admire those who go all out! I get too hot and sweaty to really put on too many layers!
ReplyDeleteI love wearing headbands that match the theme!
My most dressed up I got was for the Princess half and I wore a tutu and tiara! Haha
I love all of your themed outfits. Back in my marathon running days I'm sure I would have thought themed races silly, but these days I love dressing up for themed 5K's. I always get in the spirit for the Run with Santa 5K and Firecracker 5K. I've never run a St. Paddy Day's race and only one Halloween 5K...
ReplyDeleteLove all of your outfits! Lately I haven't done too many themed races but now think I would like to.
