We have the gear, and we have the gadgets. We even have our own special day, Global Running Day!
Since its inception in 2009 (when it was first called National Running Day), this special day is celebrated, annually, on the first Wednesday of June. In 2016, its name was officially changed to Global Running Day (source).
Shall we celebrate? I'm game, are you?
Here are a few suggestions to commemorate the occasion:
Run in the morning. One of the many benefits to running first thing in the morning is that you get it over and done with, and don't have to worry about being too tired later. It's a great time to plan out your day while listening to all the sounds of nature coming to life. And, let's not forget that sunrise!
Run in the evening. I don't run in the evening very often these days, but there's a beautiful tranquility about it. The sound of the insects buzzing is actually quite calming. It's also an efficient way to rehash the day before hitting the pillow.
Go alone. I have drafted many a blog post while pounding the pavement, and I have psychoanalyzed many a problem. It's amazing what kind of conversations one can have with oneself when it's just you and the open road.
Run with a friend. Most of us have run with friends before, and most of us love doing so. With respect to social distancing, it is possible to run with a friend (or friends) if you're careful to keep your distance from each other.
Mix up your routine. Run just one mile (maybe you're a streaker?). Do a speed workout. Hit up some hills.
Run a virtual race. This can be done on your own, or virtually with a group of runner friends. Don't forget, many virtual races support worthwhile causes and charities, so that's a win-win for everyone.
Run without your Garmin. I know it may sound ridiculous, but it is possible to go for a run with no technology to record the experience. Myself? I much prefer to run just for the joy of running. I don't need to know the exact distance or pace (unless I'm doing a time-based workout or running an unfamiliar route and need specifics on distance).
Run in prayer. Not everyone is spiritual, and I respect that. For the runners who are, though, dedicating your miles to those in need is a pretty unselfish gesture.
In other words, just run! It doesn't get much simpler than that!
Do you have any plans for Global Running Day? Have you participated in years past?
By the way...are you following me on social media? You can find me at these various platforms:
Thank you for the tips! I didn't even know it was Global Running Day until Lisa mentioned it in her post. She also said that Brooks Running is hosting a virtual 5k. Which of course I signed up for.
ReplyDeleteI am still debating whether I should race this or not...You're a great example for racing 5Ks!
Ha ha! Thanks...but I am getting a little burnt out on the 5K's LOL Only two more left, so I will finish out this adventure and gladly move on!
DeleteGreat tips. I like to run in the morning before I forget. With kids and work I get in and just want to chill. I feel like I have more energy if I get out first thing :)
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way! I always say that those early morning runs are my "coffee" because I feel so energized from them ;-)
DeleteI don't have plans, but I do plan to run. Not because it's global running day, just because that's the way my week worked out. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas, Kim!
Enjoy the day! Happy running, Judy ;-)
DeleteI'll admit that Global Running does feel a little different this year, but I'm glad that we can still celebrate it in some way. I'll be participating in a virtual relay.
ReplyDeleteDid you still want me to buzz you in the morning? ;-)
DeleteI'm debating...by rights tomorrow is a rest day but GRD fell on a rest day last year so I've got FOMO...gotta get a short run in at least.
ReplyDeleteOf course, a short run will do no harm! Tomorrow will be my third day in a row of running, since I had to switch my 5K around (due to wind and extreme afternoon heat), so my GRD run will NOT be anything speedy.
DeleteI've also had some great ideas and thoughts while out on a run. I have organized a virtual relay race for my MRTT group should be fun! Happy running and thanks for linking
ReplyDeleteoooh, I'm excited to hear about your MRTT run! I'm working on a virtual run (for the Bix-7 event, that had to go virtual). It's exciting tapping into my creativity side. Stay tuned!
DeleteI'm not sure if I'll be running for GRD because my shoulder is still annoyingly painful. It's been over a week and I'm getting a little grumpy. ;-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your run tomorrow!
I'v been participating since 2014 when I first learned about it! I definitely prefer to do my runs in the morning and solo. But any kind of running is good!
ReplyDeleteI'm just waiting for the rain to stop so I can head out and run!
ReplyDeleteI just plan for an easy run today. Nothing crazy and it will probably be on my treadmill. I need to run without my Garmin more to just run.
ReplyDeleteI have participated in years past! And I did this year, too. Just without much fanfare. <3
ReplyDeleteSo many options and if you're injured, there's always walking while dreaming of running! Happy Global Running Day, Kim!
ReplyDeleteJust run. That's all there is to it.
ReplyDeleteI did walk today, but i plan to run tomorrow. I think after this week, I will need to just get it all out on the pavement.
I wanted to get out to run one mile on Wednesday but after one thing after another, I didn't get out to run. I think last year I did run but cannot remember the years before. :-)
