Let me say it…”Ahhhh.”
After a pretty solid week of seasonal weather, I am feeling all those happy summertime vibes…and I’m loving (almost) every bit of it. Even the occasional sting of perspiration, seeping into my sensitive eyes, can’t downplay the euphoria of Summer.
So, yeah, it was a fun, busy, and (at times) warm and balmy week in my world. The #OptOutside streak is still going strong (1,662 as of June 14th). The running is maintaining. The walking is dominating. The biking is on a definite upswing. All good things!
Before I get into the nitty gritty deets, welcome to the Weekly Run Down!
I love hosting this link-up with Deborah (from Confessions of a Mother Runner)! If you write a fitness-based blog, you're invited to join the party. The link-up opens at 8:00AM (EST) on Sundays and remains open through noon on Monday. We love reading about everyone's weekly fitness endeavors, training highlights (or low lights) and race recaps. We ask that you link back to both hosts, and we encourage you to read/comment on the other linked blog as well...please don't link-drop & dash ;-)
Anyways here’s what went down in my little return-to-summer world this week:
Later, I headed over to Altoona for the Thursday night group run. The temps felt deceptively pleasant, but the humidity snuck up on us after the first mile. Still, it was a great night for an easy-paced 5K run. Let’s just say the eyes were burning something fierce from excessive perspiration seepage.

As mentioned, this week felt really good especially in terms of the summer season. I mean, we’re already halfway through June, it IS nice to have the weather finally reflect that. Running was relatively low, given the ideal temps, but 13 miles were all I was able to squeeze in with Saturday’s full day on the bike. Walking had a decent showing, with 21 miles. The biking miles came in at (almost) 88 miles, most of which were from the Bacoon Ride. The three strength sessions all were intense, but didn’t bring about any DOMS (yay for that as well!).
In other news:
Friday Fashion Flair. ‘Tis the season for sleeveless tops and bright colors. Truth be told, I’m guilty of wearing these pieces year-round, though. If you accessorize appropriately and add layers (in the cooler months), anything is possible. I also like the contrast of the bright pink with the “neutral” grey, but it helps that I have a perfect coordinating necklace to pull everything together, LOL.
Yes, there was a full moon this week! The strawberry moon was bright and beautiful for several days. I opted to do the monthly full moon run a day (evening?) early since I always run on Mondays and knew I’d be running, again, on Wednesday morning.
Finally, remember that crewneck cotten shirt from the Rail-2-Trails 10K? Well, the art geek in me gave it new life as a funky tank top this week. I am so not a fan of t-shirts, especially unisex-sized ones. They are so unflattering! I gave this little number a better neckline, cut-out the racer-back, and finished with some fringe-cuts along the hem. Presto!
So, that’s a wrap! My next race is the Midnight Madness 5K, which isn’t until July 18th. In other words, there’s nothing major on the roster for a while, so I’m planning on just running for running’s sake and enjoying the summer weather. I’m also looking forward to spending more consistent time on the bike (if the wind will cut me some slack).
How was your week? Any fun fitness endeavors or races? Did you catch a glimpse of the full moon? Ever taken the liberty to modify a race shirt into something that better suits your style?
I don't have any races coming up right now and I'm enjoying just running outside in the daylight and doing whatever mileage I want. I'm also able to fit in weight training without having to drop everything to get in my miles. Can't say I don't love it! I also love what you did with that race t-shirt! You are so talented.
ReplyDeleteIt’s really nice having the flexibility to just run and do whatever workout(s) you feel like, especially during the summer months. Gotta soak-in all that daylight!
DeleteGlad the weather cooperated for your full moon run. We saw the beautiful strawberry moon (didn't know it was called that) on our drive home from the farm on Tuesday evening.
ReplyDeleteI would so love to do the Bacoon ride with you and Barb! Sounds fun (and delicious), especially since you're such a big Harry Potter fan.
And yes, I'm not a fan of unisex t-shirts either. Nice job on making yours cuter!
The full moon was incredible! It was visible for a few days/evenings here because the sky was so clear!
DeleteGeez, I had no idea there was a full moon this week--it's been cloudy, smoky, and gloomy--but it sure makes since, given the week I had! Now it all makes sense.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to bike with Barb! That's a long ride. I'm sure you had lots of catching up to do.
We were blessed with very clear skies most of last week, so the moon looked so beautiful!
DeleteI’m trying to understand your love for summer running — is it less humid there, or are your winters so brutal that the humidity pales in comparison? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love how you re-made that shirt — it looks like something fun to wear now!
It gets very humid here, but I’d guess your humidity is probably worse. But, yes, the Iowa winters are SO brutal, I’ll take ANYTHING warmer with minimal complaints ;-)
DeleteI also do not like t shirts and usually go from long sleeve to tanks. Nice work doctoring yours up to look more flattering. Looks like you had a much better weather weekly run down than we did. I vote for you to do Adrian’s glutes program next! You will love it
ReplyDeleteI’ll definitely look for Adrians’s program!
DeleteThat Raccoon Ride sounds FUN! I'm looking forward to the recap. I love what you did with the shirt! I also don't like t shirts but I love tanks. And that one is such a nice color- glad you "rescued" it.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for you that it's finally summer! I remember what that feels like, after a long, dreary winter- the warm temps and sunshine feel so good. Now I get a little too much of those things, but I remember what it feels like to be sunshine deprived. Enjoy!
The summer season feels SO short in the Midwest, I’m grateful for the seasonal weather whenever it appears. I don’t love the humidity, it I deal with it because it’s (usually, LOL) not snowing ;-)
DeleteI really wanted to see the strawberry moon, but we have had such awful storms at night and the clouds were in the way. I bet it was lovely and pink.
ReplyDeleteCute way to repurpose your race shirt!
You know I can't join you in the love of summer, but I'm so glad you're happy!
The Raccoon Ride sounds like a lot of fun! So glad you got to enjoy that with Barb!
Thee ride was a lot of fun! It’s always great reuniting with Barb ;-)
DeleteI do hate unisex tee shirts but I use them for gardening or to sleep in.
ReplyDeleteLoving summer if only the rain would stop. But I can now run before work because it's warm enough and you don't need all those layers.
Most of my unisex shirts get stuffed in the back of a dresser drawer or donated. The few with fun graphics or colors may get modified, like this one, so they’ll at least suit my style better.
DeleteI like how autocorrect gave everyone "Raccoon", which is exactly what I was thinking each time I saw it ;) Great job on that ride!! I don't have any long rides scheduled yet, but I need to get on it. Nice customization on that t-shirt. I'm on the other side - lower cut neck lines are not flattering on me. I always pick a crew neck!
ReplyDeleteFabulous week Kim! Looking strong. That summer sunshine and heat is the best isn't it?? Clothing is more fun in the warmth too :)
