Winter (again) Reverts

We all knew it was coming, and Momma N made certain it arrived with a vengeance.

Winter! Yes, after two weeks of a beautiful reprieve from all things winter, we were brought back to the real weather of February. Alas, the fitness persevered, the #OptOutside streak was maintained, and I lived to laugh about it…

Before I dig into the deets of the week, welcome to the Weekly Run Down!

i love hosting this link-up with Deborah (from Confessions of a Mother Runner)! If you write a fitness-based blog, you're invited to join the party. The link-up opens at 8:00AM (EST) on Sundays and remains open through noon on Monday. We love reading about everyone's weekly fitness endeavors, training highlights (or low lights) and race recaps. We ask that you link back to both hosts, and we encourage you to read/comment on the other linked blog as well...please don't link-drop & dash ;-)

Anyways, here’s what went down in my little week of winter weather whiplash:

A Sunny Sunday…
With a 40K Cycling badge on the line, I opted to start the morning on the bike. After finishing the ride, I stepped outside to take in the sunrise, and the mid-40F temps felt so refreshing  (pay no attention to the fact that the pic looks like I was on a beach, LOL). After lunch, I got out for a 3-mile walk, and soaked up even more sunshine.

Never miss a Monday…
Since I skipped the weekly stair workout, for the bike, on Sunday morning, I took care of things on Monday morning instead. I didn’t do anything super fancy: 60 total flights alternating intervals of 20 flights (double-stepped) and 10 flights (single-stepped), with some push-ups mixed in between each set.

After work, I simply had to take full advantage of the amazing weather. Just a couple of miles, but in summer gear? Yes, please!

Taking things easy on Tuesday…
It had been awhile since the foam roller had seen any action, and my body was craving some TLC. I did a Pilates session (Peloton) and some extra foam rolling afterwards. The day also featured the usual lunchtime walk, and two post-workday walks (one alone and one with Max).

Windy Wednesday…
Even with the warmish temps, we decided to take a pass on the 4:45AM group run due to the wind. I was already dressed and ready (at 4:15) when we decided not to meet, so I crawled back under my cozy blankets for a little longer. When I headed out on my own, an hour later,  Momma N had upped the wind and lowered the temps a bit. Good resistance training, right? I was cutting it close on time, so I finished the three miles and saved the strength workout for the evening.

Thankful Thursday
Deb was still out of town, so I treated myself to a slight sleep-in before hitting the bike for 10 miles. I knocked-out a couple of miles of lunchtime skywalk walking, and came home (after a belated birthday dinner with a friend) to a nasty snow-covered driveway. The roads were terrible, the snow/sleet was coming at me sideways, and the temps had plummeted to the sub-freezing category. It took me a good 40 minutes to clear-off my driveway, and that was with a couple neighbors helping me. It certainly was not a cardio workout I had planned on!

Friday - it’s freezing (again)!
I had grand intentions of an early-morning longish bike ride. Then I looked out the window and saw most of my driveway had drifted back-in, I had to pivot and grab the shovel. After nearly 30 minutes of squatting, scooping, lifting and heaving the heavy snow, I called it good. I warmed back up on the bike (five miles) and added a short upper-body strength session (chest and arms).

Saturday - Keeping things in perspective…
Although there wasn’t any additional snow since Thursday night, there was plenty of drifting snow (with patches of ice hidden underneath). I had hopes of a 10K-ish run, but an invite for a virtual morning session with Deb was MUCH more enticing. She walked 5+ miles, while I biked 15, walked a mile (and nearly face-planted a couple of times while doing so), and shoveled (again). After we parted ways, I hit the weights for more upper-body strength work.

…and a what’s happening on Sunday?
The forecast is looking the same as Saturday (sub-freezing temps and moderate wind). I will get out for some walking, but will probably hit the stairway (or the bike?) in the morning. I should probably do a little lower-body strength/mobility work as well.

So, overall, the week was decent albeit minimal with miles in the running shoes (a mere five miles, thank you very much). The daily lunchtime walking has kept steady, and I was able to get some bonus outdoor walking when the temps were warm (18 total miles this week). Biking was strong, due to Sunday’s 40K ride and Saturday’s 15-miler (55 total miles in the saddle).

In case you missed out, here’s what went down on the blog:

In other news:

Friday Fashion Flair. A great thing about the suddenly cold temps is it gave me a chance to sport my American flag sweater in honor of Team USA (glass half full, right?). I haven’t caught a lot of the Olympics, but it’s been exciting watching some of the skiing (because that’s a sport I simply cannot do). A high school friend has a son on the men’s bobsled team, so I’m looking forward to seeing some of the bobsled events this weekend as well.

Garmin was generous in dolling out badges this week. The Super Strength and Year of the Horse were surprises, which is always a nice perk.

So, that’ll do for now. The recent warm-up was such a nice break from the winter temps, but my reality is Midwest living, LOL. We still have several more weeks of winter temps and conditions to face. I’m really thankful for the Des Moines skywalk, though, as the daily lunchtime 2-mile walks offer a nice break in my workday. It’s also wonderful to have all the extended daylight after work now, and that daylight keeps increasing. I’m totally on board with that!

How are things in your world? Did you get hit with any back-to-winter-reality snow storms this weekend? How’s your winter fitness doing? Have you noticed the increasing daylight, both in the morning and evening?

  1. That snow shoveling added some unexpected functional training to your workout. I'm sure I'll be doing the same tomorrow whether I want to or not.

It was great to finally catch up with you. I'm glad it worked out!

Did you knit your USA sweater? I love it!

    1. My USA sweater is from Target (I got it last summer, before Memorial Day, I believe). It has an open-weave pattern, but is actually pretty warm, which is a GOOD thing given the recent freezing cold spell.

  2. Yay for driveway strength training! Squats, lifts, heaves... functional training at its best! Who needs a gym when winter hands you a shovel?
The weather whiplash is quite something. Summer gear one day, drifting snow the next. You just roll with it and continue to rack up bike miles and walks. Well done on the consistency, Kim!

  3. We didn't get the snow that you did, thank goodness! But that wind? Booo. It sent me to the treadmill on Friday again. I'm heading out this morning with my trail sisters and that wind is still blowing strong. I think it's more windy now that I ever remember. Nice job pushing through it!

    1. The psychotic wind returned with the winter temps and snow. UGH. I’m glad the white stuff will be melted by Wednesday, though I”m sure we haven't seen the last of it yet.

  4. Fake spring was so nice while it lasted! The foot of snow that we've had since January finally melted. Of course it's no surprise that it's cold again and we got a dusting of snow overnight...that's just the name of the midwest game!

    1. I got really spoiled with the lack of snow since before Christmas. We did have plenty of cold temps and crazy wind in January, though, but February had been such an angel until Thursday…

  5. It was a nice reprieve for a few days this week and some nice melting on the sidewalks. The wind has been rough here too. I am officially over this winter! You always make the most of your weather and get it done!

    1. Even with our lack of snow (until last week), I’ve been over winter since Thanksgiving, LOL.

  6. The warm weather and free sidewalks were great this week ... but we're getting snow today!! You do a good job getting outside and keeping active no matter the weather!

    1. I hope the new snow isn’t too crazy for you! I think we’re in the clear for awhile, and it’s looking like we have above-freezing temps in the forecast, and it’s supposed to be in the 50-60’s later in the week. Hoping we don’t get any more big storms.

  7. Wow, winter really did return with a vengeance! We had a warm week with temps in the low 80s (which made me cranky for my long run) but we're getting a cooldown tonight into the 40s!!! I guess your cold air is making its way down to us.
Good think you have so many options and can pivot your workouts based on weather conditions- and you get the added benefit of the snow shoveling workouts, lol. Nice job this week!

  8. Our Wed storm didn't appear...we got one Friday night and tonight another is forecast.

Our snow will be around until June. LOL

You still maintain your high level of activity!!

  9. The weather has been so crazy this week! I woke up to snow this morning which was unexpected because apparently I haven't looked at a weather forecast in awhile! I love your USA sweater! Thanks to social media we get to discover some connection to the athletes there (kids of friends) which makes the games even better! I did learn that curling is on the schedule every day of the Olympics, which now makes sense why I see them every time I turn the coverage on :)

    1. The curling has been a daily thing, I agree. I never would have thought it was so popular!

  10. Oh no! I'm so sorry about the snow! What a bummer when you were having such nice weather. Well done getting yourself outdoors (though I know you have no choice with all that snow to shovel)!

    1. Yeah, my driveway was a ness! I don’t have a snowblower, and honestly I really don’t need one since we don’t get that many super heavy snowfalls. My driveway isn’t super huge, so I don’t mind the extra work in clearing the snow…but, that doesn’t mean I want to see any more of it, LOL.

  11. Wow, that was quite a warm-up! I don’t think we got quite that warm this week, although at least our snow washed away — until the fresh batch coming in now.

Looks like a Garmin badge bonanza! Way to go!

  12. Great week for you with a nice balance of workout and recovery. While we don't have snow, we did get another round of temps in the high 20s/low 30s. I don't mind except for the sudden drop from 85 to 30. That's rough on the skin the sinuses and the air con/heating unit.
