Runfess? I Think YES!

It's really a good thing we have the opportunity to runfess each month.

If we were talking full disclosure, there's always a few things that I need to come clean on anyways. I've learned it's always best to runfess and move on. I can only imagine it's the same for others...am I right?

That being said, here's the latest...

First of all, I have to runfess that I'm so glad to be reunited with Gustavas! Remember him? My bike? We've already logged 122 miles in the past (almost) four weeks. The hubby got me a bike computer recently, which is great for tracking the miles. I have found a few new routes (both for biking and running) thanks to the simplicity of the odometer function. As much as I'm enjoying biking, though, I'll runfess it loud and clear that I still have no interest in clip-in biking shoes. End of story.

This little gadget tells me how far we're going without needing my Garmin

Can I runfess that I truly miss the early-morning routine of race day?
Last weekend, Barb and I headed to Des Moines (an hour away) to run with a running club. I almost felt giddy on Friday night, laying out all my running gear and charging the Garmin (Barb later revealed she felt the same way). It felt just like old times hitting the road, in the pre-dawn hours, and driving to a destination in our running clothes. Sigh.

I have not really said it out loud, but I runfess that I have missed my stair workouts. The Fight for Air Climb was my first 2020 event to go virtual (March 29th). I climbed 100 flights on my own stairway that morning, and I have not done many climbing workouts since. On a whim, I decided to do some climbing on the outdoor stairway (a few blocks from our house, on the Grinnell College campus)...and the hubby wanted to join me. We've now done three stair workouts, and (dare I say?) I think he's hooked. Stay tuned...it'll be fun to see how long this new weekly routine lasts.

As my shirt says... "Eat. Sleep. Climb. Repeat."

With my eagerness for biking on recovery days, I gotta runfess that I kinda sorta saddled up and went riding Tuesday morning when I should have been walking. Total oops. Typically, Tuesdays are reserved for walking (or elliptical'ing in the winter)...and nothing else. But, check out that sunrise that I may have missed (since I probably would have headed out a little later if I was on foot). Sorry, not sorry. No regrets.
I runfess that I'm totally in love with sunrises...

With all things COVID-19 going on, I runfess the hubby and I decided to get tested.  Don't worry, and please, don't panic. Neither of us were worried that we'd even been exposed, but thought it was the responsible thing to do. The Test Iowa initiative is encouraging everyone to get tested since it is possible to be infected without showing symptoms. Our tests both came back negative, but Holy Nasal Invasion, Batman! That was most uncomfortable.

Finally, let me runfess that I'm in a whole lot of disbelief that Voldy's birthday is almost here. Seriously, he's going to be three years old on Monday! June 29, 2017 is a day that I'll never forget. I can remember almost every detail with incredible clarity. And, I have that nice 6-inch scar as a keepsake. I still catch a glimpse of the scar in a mirror, and have a hard time believing it really happened to me. I do not regret the experience, though, because I learned so much about the "big picture" and living with gratitude on a daily basis (not that I'd ever elect to do it again LOL).

three years with Voldemort!

So, there you go. Another month, another set of runfessions revealed. And I'm ready to see what July has in store.

How about you? Any runfessions that need spoken? Any biking? Stair workouts? COVID-19 testing?

  1. I'm getting on my road bike the first time this year! I won't get to see such a lovely sunrise like you did, I should have got up earlier for that, LOL.
So cool that your husband is sticking to the stairs routine.

    1. I'm glad that he's sticking with the stair workouts, too. I've been doing them on the afternoons of my #5at5's, so those are double workout days...for now ;-) Have fun on your bike!!!

  2. I've heard getting tested is so uncomfortable! Wow I can't believe its been 3 years since your injury. Time flies!

    1. The COVID testing was freaky! I could feel the maxi-length swab coming out of my throat!

  3. It's great that you've been enjoying some quality time with Gustavas :) Your sunrise pics on IG have been amazing!

And, yay for getting your hubby hooked on the stair climb workouts!

    1. Thanks, Michelle ;-) The art geek in me has really been enjoying the sunrise rides, too. It's nice having a climbing companion ;-)

  4. Interesting the state is encouraging everyone to get tested, since the test results only provide information on that specific day — did you read about the golfers who tested negative when they arrived for the Open but positive two days later?
I think a bike ride can be an easier active recovery than walking since it’s not weight bearing. LOL on the clip ins. I was scared but once I tried them there was no turning back, even though there were a few bloody knees!

    1. We were hoping the tests would show if we had any antibodies (the hubby thinks he may have had COVID back in December...when it wasn't really a "thing"). But no such luck with this testing. It's certainly a good incentive to be extra proactive in following all the safety protocol, though!

  5. I haven't ridden my bike yet this year--with my focus on training for Ice Age, I've been chasing all the running miles. I have to remedy that. And I LOVE my clip in pedals. The feeling of power is really fun!

    1. I'm glad I've had a lot of opportunities to go riding, it's such an awesome recovery vice for me. I just gotta get back out on the hilly trail...

  6. Oh goodness, I too remember your incident in 2017. I can't believe that was three years ago, and I remember being in disbelief of how quickly you recovered. You have been amazing through all that and I am so glad you came back strong!

    1. Thanks so much!!! I'm thankful how well my recovery and rally-back went for me. I think my positive attitude was paramount in making that all happen, as well as an awesome support network.

  7. Wow 3 years that went fast! I may have to convince you to try clip ins makes a huge difference in pedal stroke. I am off to ride my bike today too

    1. I hope your ride went well! I'm terrified of clip-ins, and am getting along fine without the added stress LOL

  8. Geez three years have flown! I runfess I really miss the stepmill at the gym too. There are no stairs around here to speak of and I LOVE those step workout. Even as a warmup before strength training. Thanks for linking!

    1. Right? I got in a routine of doing 10-20 flights as part of my running warm-up (back in Feb-Mar), and it really made a difference.

  9. I can't believe it's been 3 years since that incident - wow how time flies, and you bounced back from it so well too.

That's great that you and your hubby were tested for COVID. I think it's good to test as many people as possible because you can be asymptomatic and not know that you have it. I was considering going to CVS for a test but I'd rather not have my nose space invaded lol.

    1. It IS a major nasal invasion! It was freaky...I could feel the swab going downmy throat, via my nasal passage (EEK).

  10. Yay Iowa for testing everyone! On paper my state has low rates but we also don't have much testing so that begs a few questions on how well we're really doing. I runfess that I pushed it this week with a virtual 5k and a group run so my legs are tired BUT it's so satisfying.

  11. For the NYS Challenge, you can only use walking and running miles. That means no reason to bike. It's still in the basement.

I so miss race day. I forget what that's like.

I want to get tested. But it's not easy to get a test here without symptoms or being an essential worker.

    1. I mainly like biking for recovery...I'm not doing long distances or especially hard workouts on the bike. I haven't had the opportunity to bike out on the hilly trail to the lake. I need to start filtering that into my routine.

  12. There is a COVID19 testing place that's almost on one of my running routes. I runfess I've no desire to be tested. Maybe some day in the future, as my mom's place is slowly beginning to lift some of the restrictions.

I don't really follow a weekly plan. I look at the weather and go from there. :)

I would say I don't miss having to get up super early on race day, only last week had me getting up super early to beat the heat, LOL! We've had a few lovely days before the next heatwave hits.

    1. The hubby was the one who really wanted to get tested, so I went along with it. I wasn't worried anything would show...but you never know.

  13. I runfess that I had another clipping incident a couple of weeks ago (my third in three years). I only had one foot clipped in as we started to take off (as I often do) and then I misjudged where my d-i-l was on her bike so I stopped. Unfortunately, I leaned in the direction of... you guessed it, the side I was clipped in on and I couldn't catch myself. Yep, I fell over from an almost stopped position onto the concrete plaza and my bike landed on top of me RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY FAMILY.

The lines have been so long for our COVID testing sights that we've not gone. I'm interested in the antibody test after being so sick for three weeks in March with flu type A and a possible pneumonia. They didn't test me for COVID at the time because they were short on test kits and I didn't have shortness of breath...

    1. ...and that's why I am totally fine without clip-ins ;-) I'm so uncoordinated, it's just easier to avoid the panic & stress for me LOL

  14. I think getting tested is smart -- not only for asymptomatic carriers but getting an idea of where it is. Increased testing is the only way we're ever going to fully beat this. I was surprised when my antibodies came back negative as I assumed I had been exposed.
