Runfessions for June

Gosh it seems like I was just runfessing to y'all, like last week.

As per usual, lots of stuff has been happening, in the running shoes and otherwise.  We stay "young" by staying active, right? At least that's my theory.

So, June is winding down. Let's get this Runfession party started...

Let me start off by runfessing that my sleep has been even more wonky than usual. I've never been a napper (as if I'd even have the time). Lately, though, I have come home from work, and reclined myself on the couch, "for a mere few minutes," only to wake up 30ish minutes later. Yikes. Last Friday, again, I closed my eyes for a quick 20-minutes of rest (this time it was around 7:30 p.m.), only to wake up at 11:30. The hubby and I went upstairs to get ready for bed, and I realized it actually was 1:30 a.m.! Wow, that's like a full night of sleep for me, and I hadn't even gotten my pj's on yet.

We all know I'm head-over-heels in love with summer. I love the extended daylight (especially  for my #5at5 runs). I'm ecstatic for the warm days, even the excessively hot and humid ones. It's a given that I'd choose a hot summer run any day, ANY DAY, over a snowy sub-freezing one. But, can I runfess that even I'd appreciate a tiny bit of an acclimation period? We had a long winter (which lasted pretty much through the first half of "spring"). It was followed by a cold and miserably rainy spring. That didn't leave much time for prepping for the elusive summer temps that we all knew would eventually arrive. None the less, I'm glad summer is here!

Welcome, Summer!
Speaking of the sudden searing summer temps, let's chat about gardening. Last weekend, I finally had the opportunity to dig up, divide, and transplant numerous over-grown plants. It was a lot of work, on a warm and humid Saturday afternoon, but it was well worth the excessive sweat, mud and six random mosquito bites. But, with the crazy hot temps, these poor transplants need all kinds of extra water and attention as their root systems adjust to their new locations. I runfess, I much prefer biceps curls, rows, and presses (with hand weights) over hauling the 2-gallon watering can throughout my yard. First world probs.

Oh, and it's not just the transplants that are requiring some extra TLC. Most of the area flower and garden centers have everything for near-closeout prices right now. Well, never one to pass up a good deal, I now have several "new" flowers and plants awaiting my time and attention. I runfess, they need lots of extra water, too. And, I need to runfess that I haven't made the time to get them planted...yet.

You all probably remember Voldy? My 6-inch scar from that unfortunate surgery? Well, this weekend, it's the 2-yr anniversary of Voldy (short for Voldemort) joining the family. I haven't bought a commemorative cake, nor will there be a party to celebrate. I gotta runfess, though, there were a lot of good things that came out of that experience which uprooted all of my Summer of 2017 plans. Stay tuned, there is a blog post in the works which will have a heavy gratitude-enriched theme.
Can you see him on my knee?
Lastly, things just got real. All three of our kids went through orthodontic treatments, and now it's my turn. Wednesday had me in the dental chair, and now I'm in the early stages of an approximate 12-month stint with Invisalign. My teeth aren't bad, but could use some tweaking...so why not? The catch is that I have to keep the aligners on for 22 hours each day, and brush and floss every time I put anything in my mouth (other than plain water). I'm not a big snacker, but I runfess...if you tell me that I can't eat at free will, I'll be craving food round the clock. Again, another first world problem, but still.
glamour shot...NOT!

So, that's all I got for June.

How about you? Anything you'd runfess? Did summer arrive (practically) overnight in your area, too? Are you embracing the summer temps, or are you already dreading them? Any other adult ortho patients out there?

  1. The scars say that now we are real warriors! Jokes apart I hope you have solved all the knee problems.
About running in summer: I don't like because we don't have many possibilities, we can only run in early morning. Moreover the races are more challenging.
And last ... yes I am an ortho patient but ... I survive.

    1. The knee issue was an un-diagnosed staph infection that landed me in emergency surgery and side-lined for three months. Not fun, but it was manageable.

  2. My teeth are not great, despite braces as a kid (long story), and dentists have tried to get me to go again but no thanks. And now I'm glad -- can't even imagine brushing & flossing so often. But good for your teeth. :)

I would've liked it to stay a *little* cool just through the fourth -- my annual race will be searing, as usual. Darn the friend that talked me into signing up for it again!

    1. All the brushing and flossing is the most annoying aspect thus far....

  3. As much as I love summer, I'm not a fan of running in the heat. At all. I was actually enjoying the cooler temps!

    1. The cooler temps were nice, but it was such a waiting game for things to heat up...

  4. What? You don't like the temps going from 50 to 90 overnight?? Haha! After our cold, wet spring, I'll take summer any way I can get it. But I am glad I'm not training for anything and my runs can be short and on shady trails. That's so exciting about the Invisilign!

    1. Oh, yes, I'll take summer any way it arrives...but a little bit of a lead-in would be appreciated ;-)

  5. I definitely agree that temperatures swings are tough to cope with. It can be hard with winter too, but summer is especially brutal. Good luck with the Invisalign. I had braces as a kid, but my bottom teeth are a bit crowded and nudging each other around.

    1. This is my first time with any kind of intervention regarding my teeth....it should be an interesting journey.

  6. I love summer and running in the heat. I do have to tell myself it's OK to slow down. Hubby and I did our long run of 11 yesterday, but we got started early. We finished before 8 and it was already over 80 degrees! So cool about the orthodontic treatments!

    1. I didn't get out until just before 6:00 this morning. It wasn't warm (in my book), but definitely muggy...

  7. I wish I was a green thumb but I am so bad at plants they don't seem to do well around here. I've just put out my hanging deck plants so I hope I can keep them alive. I have also been really tired this week, I think it's the heat just zapping me. Hope I can adapt too bc I too, fell asleep on the couch at 8:30

    1. Maybe it's the sudden heat that is knocking me out, too (?). I honestly had not considered that LOL

  8. I admit I love the workout of gardening. There is something so refreshing about digging in the dirt. That is a massive scar!

    1. Gardening definitely is nothing leisurely! The ground was so wet and the mud was heavy...it was a very good workout!

  9. I love summer but prefer to run in cooler temps.
I think Invisalign would be tough because I am a snacker.

    1. I don't mind the summer temps like most people...maybe because I'm always cold. I'd just rather be too hot than too cold.

  10. I love summer too. The hotter the better. I'd take that over snow and cold anyday. I am a professional napper:) I think with my crazy schedule for work, I can do it anytime.

    1. I've never been much of a napper....and if I do get a short nap. it majorly messes x with my nighttime sleep.

  11. It would be nice if the temps would settle down so I could try to get acclimated - we're all over the map here!

I too couldn't pass up the good deals at our local nursery, but still haven't made time to get everything planted!

Good luck with Invisalign - my lower teeth are starting to crowd a bit and I've been toying with the idea. I'll be curious to hear what you think of it.

  12. An acclimatization period definitely would have been nice - my body is on the struggle bus. But I also love summer and am willing to put up with it. My one year anniversary of my injury is in a few weeks and I'm debating what to do for it... or if it's even something to commemorate. My end of year post from 2018 was heavy on the gratitude too - funny how the worst moments often are actually the best ones in disguise.

  13. Oooh. I'm curious to hear about your Invisalign journey!

Love all those beautiful flowers. I runfess, I'm a miserable gardener and we don't have the same variety of annuals that other places have, so I kind of gave up. Oops.

    1. I love my flowers and various other plants...it's just really hard making the time to properly care for them

  14. Those Wave petunias make me think of our gorgeous blue Waves that a deer ate. I thought that it was a groundhog or bunny, but our security camera caught a deer walking up ONTO our front porch and eating those poor flowers back to nubbins. I couldn't believe it!
