love hosting this link-up with Deborah (from Confessions of a Mother Runner)! If you write a fitness-based blog, you're invited to join the party. The link-up opens at 8:00AM (EST) on Sundays and remains open through noon on Monday. We love reading about everyone's weekly fitness endeavors, training highlights (or low lights) and race recaps. We ask that you link back to both hosts, and we encourage you to read/comment on the other linked blog as well...please don't link-drop & dash ;-)
Anyways, here’s what went down in my little world of recovery this week:
For starters, there was Sunday’s half marathon…
I arrived downtown Des Moines around 7:20, allowing plenty of time to hit the porta-potties, chat with a few friends, and line-up for the 8:00 start of the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon. Overall, the race went well. Inadvertently, I ran the first three miles just slightly slower than a 5K pace (major #oops), and that caught-up-in-the-excitement move came back to haunt me seven miles later, LOL, with lots of walking. I finished with a smile (and vertical!), but I was totally wiped out upon crossing the finish line. Details & recap are forthcoming, stay tuned.
Then there was my usual Never-Miss-a-Monday routine…
Even after 20-ish hours of recovery, my body was (still) in a world of post-finish line fatigue and crankiness upon wake-up. I opted for five miles on the bike and some lower-body mobility work (title pic, above). I got out for a 2-mile lunch walk and a very slow, mucho easy-paced 2-mile run after work. Things were still stiff, but much less so after that short run.
And Tuesday was very low-key, by necessity…
It was a day of PTO, so a slight sleep-in may have happened (obviously there was still some fatigue going on, LOL). I finally got out for a windy 2-mile walk, mid-morning, before tackling a lengthy to-do list.

Wednesday finally had me feeling recovered
I was up and at the meeting spot by 4:45 for the weekly early morning run. Wow, it was refreshing to have my legs back! Kelly and Hannah took off after the usual three miles. Since my body was finally feeling more Ike itself, I stuck around and ran two bonus miles.
But I still kept Thursday easy-peasy
Not wanting to push the recovery, I opted for more low-impact action. I started n the bike (10 miles) and finished with some upper-body work (via Peloton) before heading to the office. The day was windy, but fairly warm, so I walked a couple miles over lunch and added another mile, mid-afternoon, with Susan.
Friday followed suit with low-impact fitness as well
Nothing crazy… 20-ish minutes on the elliptical (supposedly three miles), some upper-body strength and core work before heading to work. It was a cold afternoon, with plenty of cold wind), so I limited my #optoutside streak to a lone 1-mile walk because I just wasn’t in the mood for layering-up. There will be plenty of opportunities for playing the layering game in the coming months, LOL.
Come Saturday, I was ready for a little more action…
With things feeling (dare I say?) fully recovered, I was tempted to test the waters with a mid-length run. It was a cold morning, though, so I started on the bike (in my warm basement) before a big morning errand (see below). Later, I got out for the much-anticipated run, and settled on a 4-mile distance. Ironically (?), it looks like I’m already back to that 9:4X pace (this run had a 9:44 average pace), and it was actually quite a bit warmer than anticipated. Have you ever had to peel-off not just one, but two, layers while running? This may have been a first time for that, LOL.
…and what about Sunday?
The forecast is looking chilly(38F), though sunny and seasonal. I saw there’s a 40K Garmin cycling badge up for grabs. Since my cycling has been very minimal as of recent, I’m thinking Sunday morning will be an optimal time for some long-ish distance biking. I’ll save any outdoor action for the afternoon.
So, how did this recovery week go? I’m feeling satisfied with everything. The extended fatigue from the race took me a bit by surprise, since I’m usually feeling (almost) brand new within 24 hours of a 13.1 finish line. I thought it best to stay active, but with minimal exertion. Mission accomplished. Total running tallied at 24 miles, most of those were from Sunday’s race. Walking was a very low 10 miles and biking was also on the low end, with 25 miles. There were a couple of short, but intense upper-body sessions, and daily core work.
In case you missed out, here’s what went down on the blog this week:
In other news:
Friday Fashion Flair. Yes, it was another Friday, and there was another Hawkeye game happening the next day. It’s a given there would be some black (with a little bit of gold) repping my favorite team.
As mentioned in Friday’s Runfession post, there was a new member joining my household this weekend! This was my first-ever vehicle purchase made, all on my own. Yikes, it made for a stressful week (these big purchase “adulting” things can be very taxing, just saying, LOL). Anyways, I brought “her” home Saturday morning, and the jury is still out on a potential name selection. The big thing I learned through this, was that it as was empowering knowing I was in the driver’s seat (quite literally, LOL). I was doing the dealership a favor in buying from them…and I had the power to walk away if they didn’t ultimately work with me. That said, I’m glad to have this experience done!
So, there you go. A successful race done, and an equally successful recovery following it.
But enough about me. How was your week? Any racing? Upcoming events on the horizon? Ever bought a car, all on your own? If so, did you find the experience intimidating or empowering?
Buying a car is so stressful! We bought my car 5 years ago and walked out of the first dealership after being verbally abused by the salesman. But they wouldn't give me the keys back to my car, after telling me it was only worth $3000 on the trade in . It was such an awful experience I decided not to get a new car! But my hubs was doing some online negotiating with a dealership in Madison and we had a completely different experience with a really nice salesman and left with the Jeep I'm drinving today.. Glad you were able to do it on your own and you feel good about your purchase.
ReplyDeleteMy sales guy was great, but his manager was kind of a prick. That said, after a couple days, they did come down to (almost) what I was asking for, so I’m coming away feeling good about this maiden voyage of sorts.
DeleteCongrats on the new car!! She is beautiful! Did you go in knowing what make/model you wanted or was that part of the process? I hate the process, the negotiation and how long the whole thing takes! And congrats on the half!!! Its so hard not to go out too fast especially if the energy is great.
ReplyDeleteYes, I knew exactly what I wanted and I knew what I wanted to pay. I had to compromise a bit, but so did they, LOL. I’m NOT a hardball player, so this was way out of my comfort zone.
DeleteCongratulations on your new car, she's a beauty! I have not bought a car on my own. My dad was with me for the purchase of my first car and since then I've had Bill with me.
ReplyDeleteCongrats also on the race. I'm looking forward to reading your recap!
Thanks, Deb! It was a stressful ordeal, but a definite boost to the independence ;-)
DeleteCongrats on your new wheels! I haven't bought a new car since 2012, and it took a few dealer visits to find a sales rep who thought that I was doing them a favor with my business.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to your recap! Just because I don't plan to run 13.1 ever again doesn't mean that I don't like hearing about it! I get to live vicariously through you.
I went on a hiking bender yesterday and I'm feeling it today, but in the best way. The trail was so steep that at one point there was a ladder to get up the trail! It was gorgeous and we're at peak fall colors.
That hike sounds invigorating! I bet it was nice with all the colors on display!
DeleteBuying a car on your own is very stressful! Congrats on navigating that and feeling empowered. Congrats again on your half and taking the rest you needed this week
ReplyDeleteThe added rest was apparently much needed. It’s been a long time since 13.1 miles left me feeling so drained. It really felt great to have my legs back on Wednesday!
DeleteCongrats on our new car. I bought one last year and hope to keep it for a very long time.
ReplyDeleteYou appear to be recovered. More active than many who haven't just run 13.1 miles.
What's next?
I have a 4-mile trail race in a woodland setting in to two weeks…we’ve got a few teams from my running club. A unique aspect of the race is we get a 30-second time deduction for every pull-up we do after we finish. That will be interesting…
DeleteCongratulations on the car! And the race of course, but actually I think buying a car on your own is the bigger accomplishment. I've run many races but never bought a car on my own. Sounds like you had the perfect week of recovery. Oh and you're lucky your team colors are so "wearable"- Baylor is green and gold??? Not colors I normally find in my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteHA ha on the team colors! I’m not crazy about the Iowa gold, but black is VERY wearable.
DeleteCongrats to your half marathon and the new car. Your car looks really good!
ReplyDeleteGood choice to stay active while recovering! I'm sure the muscles are much happier if they get some blood flowing.
I hear you about to "looking forward to" the cold season. Not fun.
Totally not enthused about the cold weather that is headed our way in a ew weeks. At least we know it won’t last forever, and each day takes us a day close to summer returning ;-)
DeleteCongrats on the new car! We didn’t have much leverage on the price when I got my new car, but I did go to a dealership further away because the guy at the one close to home was such a jerk. The guy at the other place was so nice, it was worth the extra drive.
ReplyDeleteI gave into tired legs on Wednesday and took it easy, and was rewarded for it — I need to remember not to resist recovery so much!
It was the dealership manager that was kind of off-putting, but the sales guy I worked with was great! I know they didn’t lose any money on me, LOL, but they did meet me at a good place with the price and “perks.”
DeleteWay to get that car! I've never done that and I'm not good at deal making. I'm always surprised how much technology changes since my last car purchase (well, especially now that I've got an EV!)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your race too. Good to hear that you eased back into your workouts.
Congratulations all around this week! Negotiating is intimidating, you should be very proud of yourself Kim!
