2020: Show Me The Bling

Should we talk about 2020 bling?

Or shall we discuss the lack thereof ?

It definitely was a year like none other. As much as I love my race bling, this year was a bit weak on the (live race) quantity...but the quality was on-point. It's been said that every picture tells a story, but I would argue that most medals would have a story as well (even the virtual ones).

Take a look...

First, I'll share the (very few) medals from my live 2020 races. Actually, I did decently in this category, if we were talking percentages of live races vs. bling brought home. What can I say? I'm an advocate for keeping that proverbial glass half full.

In January, my racing year commenced with the Winter Iowa Games 5K in Dubuque (recap HERE). It was a frigid and windy morning, and the course was pretty hilly. My field of "competitors" was small (due to the weather, no doubt), but I was happy with my 27:15 finish time and brought home a first place AG.

In February, Barb and I headed east to run the FreezeFest 5K, in Cedar Rapids (recap HERE). This was a race I'd run for the first time in 2019, so I was eager to return and defend my previous 2nd place AG. Even with an ideal course (mostly flat), it was another oh-so-windy day. I managed a third place AG with a finish time of 26:11.

In early March, the hubs and I traveled to Omaha, NE to run the Leprechaun Chase 10K (recap HERE). We'd run the Des Moines venue numerous times, but this was our first time taking part at the Omaha location. Not only was this my third race of 2020, it was also my third race with crazy wind (as well as a very hilly race course, with numerous twists and turns along the route). Not even close to a PR, but a 56:43 finish time (8th place out of 86 in my AG) left me feeling quite content. We didn't get finisher medals, and the AG winners all received glass steins in lieu of hardware, but the shamrock necklaces were plentiful (so we pretended it was the event bling).

Finally, my last IRL race happened on July 4th...the Sully Freedom Fun Run 5K, in Sully IA (recap HERE). This is a race I've done several times before. When I got the email that the RD was working with the city officials to ensure the race could happen (with all the necessary COVID precautions), I was in. The weather was hot and humid (as I knew it would be), and my legs were a little fatigued from the previous day's 47-mile bike ride. Also, did I mention I'd forgotten my Garmin (and music) back home?  Thankfully, I'd brought my own water (there were no water stands on the course because #COVID), and I just ran by feel (because #noGarmin LOL). I finished in 26:35, which was good enough for a 3rd place AG. Even better, the hubby got a 2nd AG and Barb got a 1st place AG!

And that's it for my 2020 in-person races.

With all things COVID, there were numerous race cancellations, postponements, deferrals and a plethora of virtuals. I'm not going to rehash all my virtual races here, but there are a few significant events I'd like to highlight.

A big part of my spring, and early summer, was the UN-Canceled Project series. Each week had a different theme (and color scheme), and runners had their pick of distances to run. Since I had no live races happening, I came up with the idea of doing weekly 5K time trials. This went on for 12 consecutive weeks (recap HERE). Although I was pretty fortunate avoiding rain, I had plenty of wind to battle instead. I ran the exact same 3.1-mile route, all with the hope of improving my 5K racing strategy each week. My finish times wound up being very sporadic, but my grit and determination were greatly increased. At the end of the 12 weeks, it was very satisfying to know I had persevered through all of  those 5K's. I don't think I've ever run 12 5K's in a year before, let alone all on back-to-back weeks. And I probably never will again LOL.

In late July, the swag arrived from the Driscoll's Strawberry Classic 10K, a race I'd planned to do over Spring Break (you know, like four months earlier LOL). We'd cancelled our Spring Break trip to Tampa Bay (again, #COVID), so I assumed this DNS race (and its subsequent swag) would be forfeited. No big deal. Well, when the unexpected swag showed up, I felt compelled to "earn it." At the time, our dog had just had ACL surgery, and needed constant supervision to keep his mobility restricted while he recovered. Not able to leave him unattended (the hubby was out of town), I fired up the treadmill...and knocked out the 10K with Milly. We started at 4:47 in the morning, and finished about 61 minutes later. Probably my slowest 10K ever, but this was a big-time distance PR on the treadmill. Somehow, treadmill runs always feel so much harder (to me, at least) than on the road. This virtual "race" reassured me that I can, indeed, do hard things.

In the midst of races getting postponed, my beloved DAM to DSM 20K took a hit. Originally scheduled for May 30th, it got moved back to September 5th. Then, the route was to be altered from a point-to-point course to a double-looped endeavor. Eventually, it was decided that the race had to go virtual. Then, my stress fracture happened. UGH. Well, we'd received our event swag...and biking was one of very few activities I was permitted to do...so I had a #lightbulb moment and opted to bike the 20K virtual race (recap HERE). It wasn't an ideal alternative, but it was all I had (don't worry, I didn't submit my 1:10 finish time). After running this event every year, since 2008, I'm grateful I found a way to participate with my compromised state of mobility.  Besides, if 2020 could have its own set of rules, so could I.

Another race that had been postponed (from late April), and then went virtual, was the Drake Relays Road Race Half  Marathon. When the swag arrived in the mail (early October), I felt a strong compulsion to do this on the bike as well, and to do it that very day! Temps were chilly, and rain was threatening. I pedaled hard and I pedaled fast, and I fought the 15mph wind (with 25-30mph gusts). Some rain broke through, around mile 11, but didn't last long. I made it back home in 1:01, which was a good 10 minutes faster than my best-case-scenario prediction. My quads were fried, but the rush of endorphins felt oh so sweet. I had run these 13.1 miles (virtually), back on the race's original race date, so this "biking virtual race" was more for the fun of it than anything. What was especially significant about this endeavor, though, was that the 1:01 finish time (for 13.1 miles) was a major PR (in terms of speed) since I'd biked the DAM to DSM 20K in 1:10 (a month prior). I didn't submit this finish time either.

As part of the Drake Relays Road Races, there's also a 1-mile race, called the Grand Blue Mile. All racers who do the 13.1/10K/5K and the GBM are awarded the Bulldog Double medal in commemoration . The GBM usually happens on the Tuesday evening following the half marathon (and 10K/5K races). With all things COVID, this race was postponed, and succumbed to virtual status as well. I also had run this virtual mile back in April, but since this swag had also arrived, I felt obligated to attempt a fast mile on the bike. The challenge was doing it in the dark, on an early morning ride, when I wouldn't have to worry about traffic. I rode a couple of miles as I plotted where an ideal 1-mile stretch could happen (with strategic street lights to see my bike computer). It took me three attempts to get the 1-mile distance timed correctly, I kid you not. My final mile clocked at 4:04, and (again) my quads were beat when I finished. But I got it done, with a PR for the 1-mile distance on the mountain bike.

Anyways, those are the big stories of my 2020 bling. My hardware haul isn't much, in comparison to a non-COVID year, but it's all been worthwhile. The stories behind the bling, and the memories created, all served a purpose in getting me through this crazy year. After all, even though racing had to be put on hold, running itself endured. And, when my running had to take a sabbatical, there still were other options available for fitness fixes. Glass, indeed, half full.

How did your year play out? Even with fewer (if any) races, did you swing some virtual swag or hardware?

  1. Wow, Kim, that is quite a lot of bling for 2020!
I remember your 12 windy 5k time trials - your grit and determination impressed me and inspired me to start training for a 5k, something I have never done before.
And well done on that 10K on the treadmill! To me, doing anything on a treadmill is 10x harder than outdoors.

    1. I guess it does look like a lot...but only three of the medals are from live races, so it seems bleak (to me LOL). Maybe we need to chat about a 5K challenge of sorts in the spring? I'm not too keen on 12 weeks of them...but, never say never LOL

  2. You still did alot of races this year all things considered! All my races were virtual, and only a couple gave medals. I almost forgot about the uncanceled project! It feels like that was SO long ago.

    1. Yes, I did a lot of races, but only four were live. The medals from all the virtuals (many of which were races that I'd already registered for, but had to go virtual) looks a little deceiving ;-)

  3. Yes I still did manage to get some bling.

Not as excited about them since most were virtual races.

I'm hoping for more in person races but right now it doesn't look likely.

I really don't want to keep paying for virtuals (even if they give awesome bling).

    1. At least, with some virtuals, they support a good cause. Also, I try to remind myself that the virtuals are all some of the usual "live" races have for now, and they need our support to return when things are less Covid crazy. But I totally agree...I want my live races back!!!!

  4. Compared to me, that's a whole lotta bling, Kim, LOL! Mostly my choice though. Sorry some of it had to be on the bike, but then again, now you have yet another option for exercise & that's never a bad thing.

    12 5ks in a row -- that's a LOT!

    1. Yes, the bike really came through and I'm so thankful for the valuable role it played. I need to access how many of my virtuals were "intended virtuals" (in other words, weren't previously registered-for races that had to switch to a virtual format). I think I only had a few races that were virtual from the start...and that, of course, was my choice. Some of them supported charitable causes, which I'm always a fan of.

  5. You had some great bling this year! I think the virtual races really did a great job of offering nice medals this year.

    1. I agree! We all prefer live races, but most races just couldn't accommodate that this year. I'm glad they still came through with the swag ;-)

  6. I think you have the most bling of anyone! Pretty nice, all things considered.

    1. With only doing four live races, I'd forgotten about all the virtual bling. OOPS.

  7. I remember your weekly 5k's and all of that wind! You had a great racing year considering COVID and stress fractures. I believe I missed out on 3 medals due to races being cancelled/deferred but I still got to run my favorite races (by myself) and do 2 in person races, so not too shabby.

    1. You did well, too! It's hard to distinguish between the real races that went virtual vs. the intentional virtuals I registered for because there was nothing else happening...some were more meaningful than others LOL

  8. you did manage to get in a few good ones this year! I love how you pivoted to accomplish a few on your bike as well.

    1. I'm thankful I had those three races before all the COVID hit the fan ;-) The biking was a fun alternative to road racing (on foot). Glad that light bulb was fully functioning LOL

    1. I'm really glad I had those four in-person races. It will be nice when that can happen again!

  12. You did pretty great with the bling this year! I only had one in-person race, in February. I didn't jump on the virtual bandwagon until a few of my races that I'd already signed up for went all virtual. Ah well. I actually have one more half marathon to do before the end of the year.

  13. I love that you did those weekly 5k time trials! It was a great way to approach the Uncanceled Project. And you got some cool medals, even though most of the races were canceled!

  14. You did a great job in spite of everything! There definitely wasn't a lot of bling to be had this year, and that's ok. I'm hopeful that next year there will be so much more!

I had two in-person races this year. It's good to be back, and I hope we can safely continue.

  15. You made the most of racing in 2020! Your weekly 5K time trials are impressive!

  16. Wow, four in person races is great for 2020! Congrats! I still love how you improvised and completed the DAM to DSM 20K on your bike since that was your only option.
