How About a Few 'Fessions

 Here we go again...

Time to 'fess up and share a few (or maybe, five?) disclosures, bare the (running) soles, and move forward (mostly) unscathed. Sound good?

While things have been pretty uneventful (in a good way), I do have a few things to share that have me shaking my head. Don't worry, I'm also laughing as I do so...

Shall we begin?

The century ride is postponed to 2022...
With all the biking that's happened this year, a century ride was in the back of my mind. After riding those 88 miles on Day-1 of RAGBRAI, I knew a mere 12 additional miles wouldn't be too far out of reach. The thing is, that 88-mile ride happened in late July, and there simply wasn't an opportunity to coordinate anything longer with our friends. On September 25th, though, we did knock out a 70-mile ride...which is equivalent to a metric century (62 miles) with eight bonus miles added on.  I bikefess, all of us were happy with that! And, we're planning the postponed century ride for mid-summer next year. Problem solved!

There's an earring poltergeist in my house...
A couple weeks ago, I heard something fall onto the mat under my chair at work...and it was an earring back. The thing is, there was no earring to be seen, anywhere. A few days later, I was getting ready for the MercyOne 5-Mile Run and found the missing earring...in my left shoe (which I had not worn in over a week)! In a related story, several months ago, I noticed I'd lost a treasured dragonfly earring as I was getting ready for work. My post-workout selfie gave proof that the earring was with me earlier (while on the stationary bike). This earring, therefore, had to be somewhere between the stationary bike (in the basement) and my second-story bathroom, but it never was found. Just this week, though, I happened to spot the missing earring on the pedestal base of the handle bars of the bike. How it had never bounced off  the bike is quite the mystery. So, I'll just jewelryfess that I'm paranoid this earring poltergeist will swipe another prized earring and send me on another scavenger hunt.

Talk about your awkward moments...
On one of our recent bike path rides, I'd pulled over to take a quick selfie. Imagine my surprise when I heard a fellow cyclist (a guy, none the less) say hello as he rode past me. As if getting busted takng a selfie wasn't bad enough, he also photobombed me!  I selfiefess, THAT was embarrassing. I'm just glad I could laugh about it, though I hope he didn't get a good enough look to recognize me in public without my helmet.

Oh, my pretty orchid...
Our son gave me this orchid for my birthday, back in March. The three stems each had several blossoms that stayed in full bloom throughout most of the summer. The blossoms eventually dried and fell off (I think sometime in September).  A few weeks ago, I noticed two of the stems each had a new "spike," and these new spikes each had several buds! Just this week, the first bloom opened. The third stem has what appears to be a new bud forming, so maybe that will become a new spike (with several more buds) as well. I've had orchids before, but they have never thrived like this one! I flowerfess, this orchid makes me smile every time I look at it.

Finally, the big Now What???
As most can relate, when you cross the finish line of the last race of the season, things feel weird. There's joy and elation (if the race went well). Often times, there's a slight wash of relief to know you can just coast for awhile and not have to worry about any specific training runs or XX number of miles yet to be logged.  But there's also a bit of FOMO knocking on the door, at least for me. I runfess that I really don't know what to be feeling. I don't typically need a race on the calendar to keep active and/or motivated...but, gosh, it's nice to have something to look forward to in the not-too-distant future. I do have a half marathon in mid-January, but that's a ways off. It's a good thing I have our local Turkey Trot (it's our 10th year!) next month and my annual Holiday Streak to keep me occupied in the mean time.

Anyways, whew! It feels good to clear the air, bare my running soles, and get these 'fessions in print. Now, onward!

How about you? Anything that needs 'fessing? Any interesting stories of things (like earrings) that went missing and turned up in strange places? Ever been selfie-busted and photo-bombed at once? Has your racing season come to a close?

  1. OMG that photobomb pic is hilarious! Love that he was waving! But yes, totes embarrassing. Glad you did not lose that earring and hooray for a happy orchid!

  2. My goal is very simple: just keep moving. Obviously I don't need a race as it's been years since I have raced. Sounds like you really have enough to look forward to!

Love the dragonfly earring. Very weird about all the earring shenanigans. You know I'm constantly losing stuff. I'd lost something -- big, again -- while looking for something else (which remains hidden) I finally found the first missing object. It seems there's always something missing! #firstworldproblems, indeed.

    1. I wear earrings everyday, I just don’t sleep in them. I have not lost many, so it was really odd to lose these two within months of each other...then to find both of them (by accident) practically in the same week.

  3. I runfess that I went NUTS with November race registrations. Plan A was to do a 10k next weekend and a Turkey Trot. I kept being tempted by a 5k on Thanksgiving weekend that's a new race, and after reading your back to back race report I decided to go for it. Then the 10k got cancelled and my options were another 10k the same weekend or a 5 mile race the week after...I couldn't decide so I signed up for both of them! My husband teased me and asked if I just needed the t-shirts;-)

  4. How wild about the happenings with your earrings...does make you wonder...

That photobomb shot is priceless! I especially love that he's waving :)

    1. Right? When I saw the pic, I literally laughed out loud!

  5. That is some great Turkey Trot swag! LOL on your photo bomber — but where’s his helmet??

After doing our metric century ride, I decided I have no desire to do another century. 4+ hours in the saddle is long enough!

    1. The TT swag is from last year’s virtual (in DSM), but I’ll be wearing it again for our local trot here. I think the guy does have a helmet, but it’s really hard to see with his long hair LOL

  6. I get caught in the act of the selfie all the time. My neighbors really think I am so weird. Maybe Max is playing with your jewelry? That is a mystery. I have a turkey trot and another holiday race and of course my hot chocolate race in Chicago in the next few weeks. Probably nothing after that until February. We don't have much in the winter here

    1. Your Hanukkah race really sounds neat! I’ve done the Bix-7 many times, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an 8-mile event (at least not in Iowa). I wish I could swing the Hot Chocolate with you since I’ll be in the area...

  7. Okay, that's the best photobomb. You couldn't have made it more funny if you had planned it. I love how your pose is all thoughtful, and there's this goofy guy waving in the background. Hee hee!
I agree that it feels weird not to be training for anything. I know what you can do- plan to run a race in Florida this winter! We have lots of them.

    1. I’m just surprised the photo snapped when it did (with me looking so calm & relaxed), because he really startled me. I guess I’m lucky I didn’t drop my phone :-)

  8. LOL I love the guy that photobombed your selfie! The fact that he waved make is even funnier. I always feel weird when I try to take running selfies so that's one reason why I don't take them that much anymore.

That earring story is so odd!

    1. I was riding with Barb & Amy, and had a minute while they caught up to me...when I told them about the guy, Barb laughed & said “well, that’s on you.” It really was one of those weird spontaneous things!

  9. I get caught taking selfies all the time. I get weird looks but I guess I'm used to it.

We think the same about racing. I don't know how runners can stay motivated to run without a race. Not me.

I bought a Thanksgiving themed hat and socks last year. Can't wait to wear them.

I lose one earring all the time. I've learned not to get rid of them because I may eventually find the other.

    1. I do alright just running for the love of it, but I really like having races mixed in..just to break up the monotony. Although races are coming back, they’re still kind of sparse.

  10. The photobomb is hilarious. It never happens to me because .... I don't take selfies: yes I know, I am "obsolete".
I need to race to stay motivated, when it was not possible for the lockdown I participated in many virtual.
Even if it's the end of October my race session starts now: I have some races in my wishing list.

    1. The selfies are a staple for me...probably a sign that I am taking too many. Oh well...they keep me smiling (and I’m sure my neighbors get a good laugh at my expense).

  11. I am always so self-conscious about taking post-run selfies when I'm out and about for fear of being photobombed or mocked!

After having a relatively busy running season, I'm looking forward to not having anything on the calendar for a while, though I constantly feel FOMO when seeing everyone else's exciting races!

    1. Are the missing socks returning as mismatched bowl lids? That's pretty common LOL

  13. OMG, that turkey trot hat <3
If missing socks come back as extra tupperware lids, maybe there's an earring version. Glad the dragonfly turned back up

    1. Yes, the TT hat is from last year, but it will see lots of mileage this year as well ;-)

  14. I hate getting busted taking selfies. I have a few good, low-traffic areas where I can "safely" take pics, but it's always so nerve-wracking.
