A Seasonal Chat over Coffee

Anyone up for a gathering of sorts, around a virtual table, with plenty of coffee on hand?

Well, it doesn’t have to be coffee for your beverage du jour. Actually, any beverage will do (I’ll be sipping a hazelnut cappuccino), but the conversation will be amongst friends and is guaranteed to be fun!

If you’re game, allow me to begin…

At this gathering, I’d begin with my August stats. It’s pretty obvious that walking and biking dominated the fitness, and I’m totally alright with that. As much as I love running, there are many other activities I love as well. I’m trying to keep things in balance. I’m doing a lot of cross-training these days. And, I’m keeping the running mileage at a level that fits in nicely with everything else. All is well and I am not falling victim to burnout or overuse injury. Onward!

Are you all sitting on a stable chair?  I have been drinking coffee recently. It’s from a Keurig (at work). I’m still not in love with the taste, but the aroma is pure heaven. I have figured out, rather quickly, adding cream does not make it taste any sweeter…so I’m only adding one (instead of three or four) because at least it makes the color look a little prettier. This is only happening at my work desk. If I’m anywhere else, I’ll be indulging in a foo-foo cappuccino or a chai latte.

Let me tell you about my poor, itty-bitty pinky toe. A couple weeks ago, I had an unfortunate sandal fail (broken strap), and I super-glued the strap back in place, but too tight. Consequently, that left me with a painful blister on the “outside” of my pinky toe. The awkward blister was just about healed, until I stubbed the same toe on a chair leg last weekend, resulting in some severe bruising. Meanwhile, my new pointy-toed shoes had been waiting (rather impatiently) in their box for their first public appearance. First world problem, right? Imagine my surprise when I optimistically tried to squeeze my (still) swollen recovering toe into them…and there wasn’t any pinching, poking, or pain! I was even able to walk a couple of lunchtime miles in them, albeit somewhat slowly.

As if the toe wasn’t a big enough inconvenience, I’ve had a funky infection wreaking havoc with my left thumb. I have no idea how or where it began, but the skin has been swollen , hot, and painful to the touch for several days. I finally went to an urgent care clinic, and came home with a 7-day supply of antibiotics. Fingers-crossed, that will be back to normal soon because I have zero grip strength with my left hand at the moment.

Finally, after several months of wear and tear in exhausted shoes, I got some new kicks for running! After many recent years sporting Brooks Adrenalines, I ventured into a new arena with Asics. These are the  Kayano-32’s, and so far are feeling great! The peeps at the store analyzed my gait and brought out several different brands of stability shoes to try, and the Kayanos felt the best

Well, I’ve had the floor long enough. Allow me to step aside and let someone else take over the conversation. I might even grab a second cup of (real) coffee, LOL.

If we were gathered together, what would you share with the group? And, more importantly, what would you be drinking?

Since it's the first weekend of the month, I'm linking this with Deborah and Coco for the Ultimate Coffee Date

  1. I’ll take a chai latte at this virtual table, thank you very much!
Sorry to hear about that poor pinky toe (and then stubbing it again!). Good that the pointy shoes were kinder than expected.
Fingers crossed the thumb clears up quickly too! By the way, how did you manage to take that photo?

    1. The magical pic came from laying my camera (phone) on my desk, facing “down,” and using the timer to capture the lovely puffy thumb ;-)

  2. The thing that I've always loved about your fitness is that you do so much of everything without letting any one thing dominate. Ouch on your toe and your thumb - same question as Catrina we want to know how you took the photo!

  3. I wore Kayano for about 10 years when I first started running. Can’t really remember why I switched but it can be good to alternate and mix things up! Ouch on the baby toe! Wow you are drinking coffee! Welcome to the dark side :)

    1. The coffee thing is still in the very early stages…..I think it’s gonna be a long process, LOL.

  4. Gosh, I hope all your wounds heal soon! Good thing you got antibiotics for that thumb.
I switched from Brooks to Asics a few years ago but I’m in the GT-2100 (?). No dramatic reason, they just felt better when I tried them on!

    1. These ASics feel really good so far. The last two models of the Brooks Adrenalines just didn’t feel as good as previous versions, so it was time to try something different.

  5. What in the world- that thumb thing is really weird! Well, the antibiotics should do the trick- I hope it feels better soon.
Those pointy shoes are making my feet hurt just looking at them- and I don't have any swollen toes!
I'm like you- I don't like the taste of coffee. It's an acquired taste, so maybe you'll acquire it! I'll just stick with my Earl Grey tea.

    1. The coffee taste acquiring thing is gonna be a lengthy process, I’m afraid…

  6. Yikes! Sorry your digits have been taking a beating lately. Hopefully both will heal up quickly. Glad the Asics are working for you. When Mizuno changed up my favorite shoe, I became an Asics girl as well.

    1. IT’s so frustrating when the shoe companies change-up their shoes!

  7. Ouch for your toe and thumb :( Hope all heal quickly! Good to hear the Asics are working for you. I'm going for a fitting later this month and can't wait to see which shoe I end up with.

    1. I was long overdue for a proper fitting, so these shoes feel like winners so far.

  8. I have a weird thing going on with my pinky toe, too! I feel your pain, quite literally! I hope you heal up with everything quickly.

The Kayano is a great shoe! I always felt like Asics didn't have enough room for my long toes, but I wonder how they've changed in the years since I last tried!

    1. My narrow feet like the narrow (tapered) toe box…so many stability shoes look like clown shoes on me, LOL

  9. I immediately had the same question that others have raised, how did you take that photo of your thumbs? Was the timer used or maybe a coworker was involved? Here's hoping your pinky toe heals quickly!

    1. Of course, I used the timer ;-) She’s my best friend, ha!
