‘Fessing for the First Time this Fall

How is it we’re back at the ‘fessional already?

It’s messing with my mind how fast time is flying by, but here we are. September is on its way outta here and October is knocking (loudly) at the door.

Anyways, here goes…

Speaking of time flying, I all but forgot about the Equinox this week. September 22nd was the 12th anniversary of my first-ever marathon, so that reality kind of dominated my mind. I gotta runfess that is it wasn’t just the fact that I had actually run a marathon (it was the first of nine, actually, but who’s counting, LOL), but the fact that it had already been 12 years since doing so was surreal.

This Facebook memory popped up, giving me a wav of nostalgia

Do you remember my ordeal with stubbing my innocent pinky toes a few weeks ago? It was still hurting some (but not as bad as before)…until I smashed it again in the exact same place with the exact same chair leg a few days ago. Now it hurts again, and even more so. Ugh. I runfess, I can’t make this stuff up. Maybe I need to bubble-wrap myself, or at least my poor pinky toes.
Can you guess which (swollen) toe is the compromised one?

Speaking of my compromised toe, I have to runfess it kind of has me (slightly) second guessing my plans of running the IMT Des Moines Half Marathon on October 19th. The irony? I procrastinated something terrible, and just registered last week, before the final price increase. With it costing me just shy of $150 (with all the ridiculous fees), I feel like I’m fully vested. I know my endurance is good, and I am in a good place with my mileage, so fingers crossed the toe will feel better come race day. It doesn’t hurt at all when running or walking, but pressing on it is another story, LOL.

In a related course of discussion, I recently got new shoes…the ASICS Kayanos. They have been feeling really good, even with my compromised toe (and vicinity), but I think the sales guy fitted me in too-big shoes. Seriously, I runfess they felt (and probably looked) like clown shoes. I took them back and swapped them for a smaller size, and I think these new ones will be winners

Finally, in a non-running-related matter, my flowers have been going bonkers! We’ve been in a bit of a drought, and they’re still thriving. Too bad I can’t say the same for the grass in my yard. Still, I can flowerfess that it’s pretty satisfying to see how well my first flower garden did in my new location. The marigolds were grown from seeds a friend had given me. Some of the flowers were purchased. Others were discovered in clusters of weeds and “re-homed.” I’m eager to add a few more to my yard, and possibly get some discounted end-of-season perennials to start a border along the fence line. Stay tuned.

So, that’ll have to do for this round of ‘fessions. I can now wish a fond farewell to September and move on to October, though I’m still in denial that we’re officially in the fall season.

You’ve heard my ‘fessions, do you have any to share with the crowd?

  1. Twelve years since your first marathon! That’s something to celebrate!
Ouch on that pinky toe though… maybe it really does need bubble wrap.
Glad the new Kayanos are working out in the right size, and fingers crossed the toe behaves for DSM - you’ve got the endurance, so it’ll be fine!

  2. Oh, ouch on the toe. Maybe this isn't "good" advice, but if it doesn't hurt while running, I would definitely go ahead and run! Actually your race is far enough away that you could probably take a little time off to let it heal, and still be ready to run on the 19th.
Yay for your marathon anniversary! Time flies, doesn't it?

    1. Knock wood, the toe (and the “joint” that attaches it to the actual foot) only hurt when direct pressure is applied. I just hope I can keep things safe (with no more stubbing) until race day

  3. Happy Marathonaversary! I've never celebrated my first one before but I think I'll start. It'll be 18 years since I first toed the line for 26.2 on 10/7! Awww sounds like your poor pinky toe is really taking a beating. I hope it holds up for you during the race. Your flowers are gorgeous!

  4. Oh your poor toe! Hopefully you've got enough time before your race for it to recover.

Your garden looks so good! I'm also scouring the nurseries for some end of the season deals - hope you find some good ones!

    1. I spent awhile, this afternoon, deadheading and yanking out some of the overgrown stuff. It’s a lot of work, but worth it. I hope we both can score some good nursery finds!

  5. Your poor toe! Maybe the bigger shoes were to keep you safe!

Look at those gorgeous flowers! I want to brag that my dead mums from last year revived themselves. It's a Halloween miracle!

I totally didn't have tons of time for the equinox. I wanted to do a big soup themed night, but instead, I just did a quick one-pot recipe and hoped for the best. It happens.

Your race will be fine! You've got this!

  6. Hope your toe feels ok. I like my shoes 1 1/2 sizes larger because they feel tighter when I run long distances but of course when I tyr them n they feel big.

9 marathons? wow. Is there one in your future? Not mine. Too much training and stress.

    1. I typically go 1 or 1-1/2 size bigger for running shoes also. These were two full sizes, though, and they just felt obnoxious…

  7. clearly you need to get rid of that chair !!
I recently got into my front garden and in a maniacal frenzy ripped out all my geraniums because I wasn't vibing with them anymore LOL. so then I had to put some other plants in - a whole bunch of lavender is lovely and keeps the roaming cats away as well! happy I didn't but I flowerfess that my back was broken for a couple days afterwards!

  8. Your pinky toe looks even worse than I envisioned when you told me about it. Ouch! I'm glad you were able to exchange your shoes for the right size and I hope your pinky toe and they do just fine in your Des Moines Half.

    Your flowers look great!
