Can't you just see (or feel) the irony?
We all have our drinks of preference, and I'll choose a hat chai (most days) over anything else. The summer heat, and subsequent humidity, came barreling in this past week. Personally, I don't mind the heat much, but the humidity really does a number on my hair. Oh well, at least it's not snowing.
Anyways, it's that time of the month most of us look forward to...time for gathering round a table and chatting, virtually that is. Shall we get started?
If we were having coffee, I'd share my recent haul of hardware. Since there have not been any live races (since the Leprechaun Chase,March 7th), these medals all are from virtual events. Three of these virtuals were actual events that had to switch to a virtual format, and two were from virtual events that I wouldn't have otherwise done. Prior to this year, I kind of shunned virtual races and didn't really care much for any of the swag or bling that went with them. Well, things certainly changed once COVID-19 became a reality. Thus far, I have done 13-5K's, three 10K's, one 15K, three half marathons, one 18-miler and a team relay. Although I did the work, the virtual swag doesn't mean as much to me as if these had been actual live races. Oh well...such was everyone's reality.
I'd also tell you a bit more about the Quad City Times Bix-7. The race is usually held on the fourth Saturday in July, but had to go virtual this year (I know, shocker!). With it being virtual, that opens the opportunity for anyone to run the 7-mile race at their own convenience. So far, I have 10 peeps on my "virtual team," many of them fellow fitness bloggers that we all know and love. My Bix-7 swag arrived this week, but there's still time to join us...you can complete your seven miles anytime July 1-25th. Tentatively, several of us are planning to run "virtually together, but physically apart" on July 25th, so be looking for some fun "group" pics. My promo code is Rakh2020 if you decide to join us!
Speaking of pomo codes, I also have a discount code for ROAD iD! Do you wear any kind of identification while on the road (running, walking, biking, etc.)? It's reassuring to have emergency contact info at the ready should something unfortunate happen. ROAD iD has many options for ID tags and bracelets, as well as tags for your fur kids. My code RUNNINGONTHEFLY will save you 20% on any purchase through July 29th.
If we were to talk about June, I could tell you my mileage stats were decent. I didn't reach the century mark with running or walking, but that's never a priority anyways. I barely passed it with biking, but the biking miles come a lot easier than do the miles on foot. With the increase in heat and humidity, I can assure you there will be plenty more biking miles happening in the next couple months. I'm working my way across Iowa (via the Great Run Across Iowa), and as of Thursday, I've gone 174 miles. I'm logging both my walking and running miles, but am hoping I can reach the 249 mark with my running miles alone (which are currently at 90, so I won't have any room for slacking LOL).
I just mentioned biking...well, the hubs and I are embarking on a long ride on Friday. Potentially, it could be upwards of 50 miles. The trail is fairly flat (or so we've been told LOL), but that's a long distance for this biking novice. Oh, and we also have a live 5K race on Saturday morning (yes, a LIVE race!). I'm not worried (I've done other races the day following a long bike ride), but this will be an interesting endeavor with Gustavas. Stay tuned.
So, anyways. Those are a few things I'd share with you if we were having coffee and conversation.
How about you? Anything new? Has it gotten hot and humid in your area? How's your running? Walking much? Or biking?
Since it's the first weekend of the month, I'm linking this with Deborah and Coco for the Ultimate Coffee Date.
"The trail is flat or so we've been told" sounds like the start of a good story. Enjoy your ride! The medal for the virtual half that I did in April just came this week, and it was nice to see it. The most exciting thing that happened to me this month was that I met an IRL runner who hooked me up with the neighborhood running group. Running with others is new to be but it's so nice.
ReplyDeleteha ha ha...there is a lot to tell about that bike ride LOL I can't decide if it's worthy of an entire blog post, though.
DeleteWhat do you do with all those virtual medals? I try not to collect any medals from virtual races if possible--I just don't feel right displaying them on my medal rack. Maybe I need to let that go? Looks like virtual races are going to be with us for a long time.
ReplyDeleteMy medal rack is a "coffee mug peg rack" of sorts, and there's a separate peg for virtual medals...still they look odd. Although I did all the miles, they look like posers hanging there with all the others LOL.
DeleteYes hot and humid and rain everyday at some point. I’m covering NYS so walking a lot and running some.
ReplyDeleteI want a real race!!!!
Our rain kind of let up this week (finally!), but the humidity has been crazy.
Deletewow 50 miles is a long time for a novice biker! Hope you are bringing lots of snacks and drinks. I find the fueling tricky on those long rides. Can't wait to hear about it. I am off on my bike today too. It's going to be almost 100 degrees today ugh
ReplyDeleteThankfully, it was "only" about 47 miles LOL, and we stopped for lunch at the halfway point (it was an out-and-back endeavor).
DeleteOh,I hope you enjoy your bike ride. I hope you brought snacks! I’ve never cared about monthly mileage but am finding myself trying to reach that century mark once I did without trying in May, and since I’ve got no other goals to focus on.
ReplyDeleteI have found for me, if I try to reach a mileage goal I tend to focus on the quantity and not so much the quality.I just do better not going that route LOL
DeleteHave fun on your bike ride - looking forward to hearing how it goes!
ReplyDeleteSince the shutdown I've only done 2 virtual races. I've got one more on the schedule from a canceled race but have been feeling very "meh" about running it. Maybe I need to embrace your enthusiasm :) It's great that you've got a whole team pulled together for the Bix!
There's still time for you to join us for the Bix...just saying ;-)
DeleteIt got hot and humid here and now it's back to windy and rainy! I did hit 100 last month for the second month in a row, which never happens. I'm pleased with that as I'm keeping out and about and keeping my immune system topped up.
ReplyDeleteI did our club's virtual 10k in May and I'm doing our local mill museum's 5k this month and you get a medal for that, as the money goes towards maintaining our local museums.
I like it when virtual races benefit a cause or charity!
DeleteI remember now that you and I both like the heat. I don't mind the humidity either. Wow! You did a LOT of virtual races. Good for you! I have an actual in-person race on my schedule for the end of next month. It's a small one on the trails. They will be using social distancing at the start and finish. Runners must wear masks before and after (but not during) the run. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it actually happens.
ReplyDeleteHope you are having fun with your hubby on the long bike ride. 50 miles!?!?! That's awesome!
I don't love the humidity, but I can tolerate it (most days). The ride was tough, and rough at times (Badass, quite literally LOL).
DeleteMost of the virtual races I did were sort of informal, so I've only gotten one medal and one pin for virtual races so far. But I did win a gift card to my local running store for getting 3rd female in a 5k! So that was exciting.
ReplyDeleteI hope your long bike ride goes well!
I didn't get any rewards for any of my virtuals, but did score some swag. I'd love a gift card to a running store!
DeleteA live race???? Looking forward to hearing about that one!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the bike ride. I hope it is as flat as you've heard!
Yes, the live race was this morning (Saturday). It was so nice to be on a race course!
DeleteToday was disgustingly humid, but luckily I wasn't running. Hoping the rain pushed the humidity out for tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteWalking -- always! Indoor cycling. Just not a fan of biking!
Our humidity has been sky-high this week. Makes things a bit more challenging...
DeleteI hope your ride went well today! We have a 52-miler on tap for tomorrow morning in MD. I'm really looking forward to it, but also a little apprehensive because we're going to be riding on the road.
ReplyDeleteHave fun and good luck at your LIVE race! Earlier on I had hoped that my annual Firecracker 5K would be live (and that I'd be recovered and running by then), but it went virtual. Honestly though, if it had been live I would have skipped it. I have zero desire to walk a real race.
Have a great holiday weekend!
It was so nice to be back on an actual race course!
DeleteWow! All the best with the live race. Sounds so novel in these crazy times. I did the Race Across IL but opted out of the medal. This hot humid weather is perfect for biking. I need to get that dang flat fixed.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate biking in the recent heat/humidity. It's definitely a lot more tolerable.
DeleteI was so happy to get the virtual swag for the Bix7 race this week! Can't wait to run it virtually with you and all the other fitness bloggers :)
ReplyDeleteI am SO EXCITED for the Bix ;-) We'll have to plan out some neat "group" pics ;-)
DeleteThanks for the RoadID code! I don't have one. I was out on a long bike ride alone yesterday - nothing happened but I still would have felt better with one.
ReplyDeleteGoing to try it out now!
Excellent! The Road ID does give peace of mind, both to the user and their emergency contact peeps.
DeleteThat's a lot of virtual races! I just can't get into virtual racing. I did one but then thought "What's the point?"
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love riding? I like that you can stop and eat then ride some more, something you can't do with running.
I love all that swag and bling!
ReplyDeleteI'm walking and running every day (one or other). The weather app repeatedly states "poor air quality", so that means gross humidity, pollen, and sometimes smoke. Whee.
I love all the great challenges everyone is doing this summer.
