Getting it Done!

Sometimes, you just gotta get it done.

The weather may be foul. Your body may be tired. Your spirits may be down. But you just gotta do what needs to be done.

This past week was interesting.... the weather continued to be wacko, my work load was lighter than usual, and (amazingly) my body felt energized. Here's what all went down in my little corner of the universe....

Monday
Well, let's just say Momma N didn't want to play nice, and (for once) I let her have her way. With a 10K on tap for the weekend, and a half marathon happening soon, I really did not have any time to risk getting sick in the damp, rainy, and windy conditions outside. And, it was Monday, after all...which means there was a #nevermissaMonday on the agenda. So, I did what needed to get done, and dusted off 'Milly and ran a couple of miles with her in the afternoon. That which doesn't kill us...right?
miles with 'Milly
Tuesday
Fitness-wise, it was a very low-key day. I did the usual early morning power walk through the 'hood. But, let's not forget it was Halloween! I honestly cannot remember the last time I did NOT participate in the festivities of this crazy holiday. I got called a lot of things (electrician, lineman, construction worker),but the best was a Village People impersonator!

Wednesday
With the start of a new month (seriously, it's November already???), I launched my new monthly goals.  I will still be running 3-4 times each week, as well as planking every morning (and sometimes in the evening as well), so there's no need to highlight them. I also plan on adding 20 daily push-ups to the roster, though, and bringing back the daily leg lifts (which I did while in the early stages of post-surgery recovery). It may look like a lot, but it's probably just an extra 20-minutes added to my day. Most of these mini-workouts will be done intermittently throughout the day, so they will not require a huge chunk of time. At least that's my plan...stay with me and we'll see how this plays out.
November, let's do this!
Thursday
We all know what happens on Thursdays...#5at5! I met up with my friend, Barb, for this weekly ritual. The temps were in the low 40's and we had a super thick layer of fog to navigate through...but our run went well. I wore a base (fleece-lined) layer, a light puffer vest and (unlined) tights, and with the lack of wind (thanks, Momma N!), those five miles felt utterly effortless.
another successful #5at5
Friday
With the 10K happening on Saturday, I didn't want to do anything crazy on Friday. I did the usual early morning walk (with Max) as well as the other daily mini workouts. I also did a lot of foam rolling and stretching throughout the day. And, of course, there was planking....
It's a good thing the hat matched the tank, because I forgot to remove it after my early morning walk
Saturday
I was up at 4:30 a.m. and on the road by 5:45, en route to Carlisle, IA for Saturday's Hillbilly Hike 10K. This is an event I've done before. I ran the half marathon both in 2014 and 2015, but elected to do the 10K this year (since R'n'R Las Vegas is next weekend).  I'll share this spoiler alert--my finish time (57:25) wasn't even close to a PR, but it did snag me 3rd place AG honors! Stay tuned...the recap will be posted this week!
Yes, I did dress (and run!) in a flannel shirt
Sunday
With the extra hour of sleep, it was nice waking up to actual daylight! Max went along for the early morning walk, and I also did a short 1.5-mile shakeout run in the afternoon. The temps actually felt much warmer than the mid-40's on my weather app. Could it be I have already acclimated to the winter-like temps? Funny how your body (and mind?) just get it done.
I love my little Max!
Overall, the week went well despite the colder (and windier) than desired weather. My running mileage (Monday-Sunday) came in around 15...kind of low in comparison to previous weeks, but I was due for a light week. I am not tracking the walking miles anymore, but I am averaging 1.5-2 miles of those each day as well. It feels good to be doing push-ups (regularly) again, and the leg lifts are great for general conditioning and strength with the added benefit of balance work.

In case you missed them, here's my posts from last week:
What Happened to Fall?

In other news:
I am NOT a candy corn fan. Ugh. I think it's a terrible waste of perfectly good sugar. I had to laugh when I saw oodles of unsold candy corn in the store...maybe I'm not so alone in my dislike of this "sweetened candle wax" stuff?
apparently no one else wants this either?
Did you catch my #FridayFashionFlair post on Instagram? I love my sweater coats, and we all know it's been cold enough to wear them recently. Do you have any sweater coats? They are great for casual wear, but can be all dolled up for dressier occasions. Please join me on Fridays...post a pic of your Friday outfit (or a favorite outfit from the week), use the hashtag #FridayFashionFlair, and give me a tag (@Runningonthefly). It's fun to see fitness-minded peeps in non-fitness clothing!

I have a fashion confession. I succumbed to the temptation and bought a cheap pair of Christmas-themed leggings. I promise, I will not wear these in public unless I'm in running gear. Now, I just need to find a holiday race to do...
Yes, I caved....
And, lastly, our youngest turned 18 this week. What the WHAT????? It's crazy how fast time flies...

So, enough about me. Tell me something interesting about your week...crazy weather? Candy corn: yay or no way? Do you ever sport the holiday-themed leggings?

  1. You just reminded me that I need to plan a holiday outfit for my Jingle Bell 5k! I'm running on my rheumatologist's team because she's being honored this year. Kind of excited about that one--since my work finally decided that I could have that morning off. Sigh.

    1. Yay for a morning off ;-) I saw a Jungle Bell 5K just this weekend (it may be the same one as you're doing...I think this is a national event with venues all over the country). This one is sponsored by the orthopedic surgeons practice that I spent the greater part of my summer visiting for all of my follow-up appointments.

  2. Congrats on your 3rd place age award. I'm with ya, I hate candy corn! I was just saying that I want a fun pair of holiday tights, and my sister had already bought me a pair of snowman tights for me. She knows me well!

    1. Well, this race only awarded the 1st and 2nd place finishers LOL Seriously, there have been so many races where I've finished either 4th place (and, naturally, got nothing for it) or finished 3rd (but didn't get an award for it either). Oh well, it felt good to know I at least was in contention for something, right? ;-)

  3. I used to love candy corn, but it's definitely something I've outgrown. I don't eat a lot of the sugary stuff I used to eat. I think my dentist appreciates that.

    1. I have honestly never liked candy corn, and I'm an "all things sugar" kind of gal.

    1. ha ha...those leggings were a very spontaneous purchase LOL (you probably will not see them featured on any of my Fashion Friday posts, though)

  5. I confess that I'm a fan of Indian corn. It's the one with chocolate on the bottom instead of yellow. I do eat it sparingly, though. ;-)

I'm scheduled to run two different holiday races so feel free to come join me!

  7. The weather here has been nuts - 70s one day and then in the 50s the next day. I really don't know how to dress for this weather anymore, lol.

I also hate candy corn. I don't understand how anyone can like it, lol.

    1. Candy corn is SO nasty! Every now and then (like, every three years or so) I try to eat one piece of it...just to see if my tastes have changed. The verdict? Yuck. Choke. Gag. Just cannot do it.

  8. Congrats on your race!! Sounds like a great week of workouts. I am not a fan of candy corn either. I feel like its either one of those things that you love or hate.

  9. Fun week! I'm looking forward to everyone's recap of the RnRLV. I am an absolutely NAY for candy corn. Even as a kid I couldn't stand it.

  10. I predict you will do great in Vegas! I never was a fan of candy corn. I'm more of an "if it isn't chocolate, why bother" kind of gal. Your daughter is lovely! Our youngest will soon be 18 as well. Thanks for linking.

  20. I do like sweater coats! Though I tend to live in my skating clothes, LOL, they work for our foggy, rainy weather and I often just continue my day in them. Especially on weeks like this. This is our third day of snow on the ground, very early. When your youngest is an adult, that is a big milestone indeed! Congrats on getting your children all raised to adulthood! But will they appreciate all your work getting to this moment? Never, LOL. But other moms can.

  21. I love Christmas leggings and bought a pair last year. I only wearing them to running events or in the house as well! Way to go with your 10k!

  23. I used to like candy corn, but it's too much sugar now -- I want my sugar + fat!

I hope that you can find your holiday race. And have fun in Vegas this weekend!

  24. Candy corn: nope, nope, nope. Happy belated to your daughter! Time does fly, doesn't it? I do own holiday leggings, but they are gold sequin printed (not actually sequined, just a photo of a sequin pattern printed on them). I tend to break them out around the holidays because they're festive, but they aren't a holiday "print." I hope you find your holiday race!

  25. Congrats on your race! I will eat candy corn if its the only option and I need something sweet, but definitely not my favorite! :)

  26. Crazy weather: we got a lot of snow last week! Snow is normal this time of year, but a foot+ is a little over the top. No holiday leggings here, but I do have some fun galaxy leggings. Unfortunately the super cheap fabric they are made of is not fun to wear, so I don't wear them often.

  27. Congrats on the AG award! I used to love candy corn, but it's too sweet for me now... we always mixed it with peanuts to cut all the sweet.
