Got belt, will run! SLS3 Dual Pocket Run Belt Review

Do you run (or race) with a belt?

I have tried some different running belts in my time. Several running belts, actually. I have liked all of them, but the honest-to-goodness love? Of a belt? Hasn't quite happened...yet.

I was given the SLS3 Duel-Pocket belt to test and review. Let me tell you, this belt is pretty nice!

The first thing I noticed was the durability of  the belt. The elastic is medium-sized and very strong. The belt is adjustable, so you can make it as tight as you need it to be, depending on where you wear it (high on the waist or low on the hips) or how many layers of clothing you have underneath it.

Unlike similar belts I have tried, this belt has two expandable pockets, and both are big enough for a phone, several gels, car keys or cash/bank cards. My daughter's Iphone-6  fit inside, easily. And, an added bonus? These pockets are waterproof! I always had to put my phone in a zip-lock bag to keep it dry when I carried it in any of my other belts, so this waterproof feature is extremely nice (Hello? How come no one else has thought of this?).

I tested the belt on a couple of outdoor runs. The first run was about three miles long, on a cool (but not freezing) morning. I had the belt fairly low on my hips, under my polar fleece jacket. By the time I had gone about a half-mile, I could feel the belt starting to inch its way up towards my waist. It also was sort of twisting around.  I probably didn't have it tight enough (my bad), and since I only had stuff in one pocket (and not both), I thought maybe it was "unbalanced". I had to slide it back down (to my hips) a couple times, and by the time I had run two miles, I resolved that it was going to do as all other belts have done....keep sliding to my natural waist. I gave in, and slid it up to my waist. Although I could feel it rotating around a little, it did not bounce! Once I slid the pockets to my back (instead of trying to keep them in the front), the belt stayed in place for the rest of my run.

The second time I wore the belt was for a short two-mile run, also outside, but this time I put stuff in both pockets. Again, the belt seemed to want to shimmy up to my waist (instead of staying on my hips), and felt a bit awkward with the two full pockets in the front. So, again, I rotated the belt around, so the pockets were in  the back, and it felt better. Much better. Again, no bouncing.

Once I got home, I wanted to test it without a jacket covering it. I lost the jacket, and ran a quick mile on the treadmill.  This time, I put it on my waist, with both pockets in the back, and it did not move at all.

A few days later, I wore it out on a seven-mile run. Not wanting another "spinning-around" battle, I wore it  with the pockets in the back, and tried (one last time) to secure it low on my hips. Although it did not immediately shimmy upwards, I could tell it was not going to stay there. I did have to slide it back down, but only a few times.

So, what is my impression of the SLS3 belt? I really liked it! It was frustrating that it wouldn't stay low on my hips, but none of the other belts I have used stayed there either. If Dr. Phil were to intervene, he'd probably ask, "What's the common denominator?"  And I'd have to answer, "Me (and my waist)." Anything with elastic will work its way to the smallest part of my body...which just happens to be my waist. I can't change that reality. But, this belt definitely stayed in place once I figured out to wear it with the pockets on my back, and it did not bounce whatsoever.

Would I use this? Definitely, but it would depend on the distance I'm running. Although I like that it has the capacity to hold a lot of stuff, I typically don't need to carry that much cargo. Most of my long runs are mapped out to loop back to my house every 5-7 miles, so I really don't need to carry fuel with me. As for long-distance races, though, there sometimes is a need to carry multiple items...most of which do not fit easily into any of my other belts.  And, if it's a race, I will also have my key fob with me as well as any fuel and my phone (and who knows what else? tissues, lip balm, etc.).

Now, for the best part!!

  1. I had the same experience with the shimmying. I don't like things around my waist, so I had to keep pulling it down to my hips. Still, I'd use it for a longer run to carry gels and other essentials.

    1. I don't like the waist-hugger thing, either....but it happens to me with everything. I really like this belt, though. It was nice to finally have a belt that didn't bounce ;-)

  2. The more I hear about this belt, the more that I want it! I like that there are two pouches to carry your stuff.

  3. I reviewed this belt too and I do like it. But like you, none of them will stay on my hips! However this one is so comfortable, it doesn't bother me sitting on the waist.

    1. I liked that it didn't bounce! Yes, it was comfortable for me after I turned it around and wore the pockets on the back side.

  4. I keep thinking I'll win one of these. Dang. I have heard good things about his belt, I like the fact that it is slim and waterproof. Throwing in my name for the drawing! :)

  5. Trying it for 12.90 is totally reasonable! I would hate to pay $30+ for something I'm not going to like, as I often do when I make impulse purchases at race expos.

    1. oh the race expos! I have a belt I bought at an expo that has a big 'ole water bottle that fits in the holster. I've used it (only a few times) for long runs in the extreme summer heat, etc., but it makes me feel like a momma kangaroo with her pouch on backwards..... Very awkward and uncomfortable

  6. I love my spibelt. 2 pocket instead one one would be great.

  7. I have this belt and I like it so far. I didn't notice it spinning, but then again I put the pockets in the back. I really like something like this at races with no gear check. I've been caught too many times with nowhere to put my car keys. Or if I put them in my skirt pocket they make my skirt shimmy down. Much no bueno.

    1. I've tried putting my key in that "little convenient waist pocket" on shorts or capri's...and darn near was de-panced in the process. Mucho NO bueno, indeed!

  8. I've been testing it out too and love that it does not move around on me when I run.

    1. It worked great on me once I figured out it worked best (for me) with the pockets in the back. I think my ribs/waist have an awkward placement for belts LOL

  9. I definitely think you're on to something and it all depends on our shape which will cause it to shift or not.

    1. Exactly. Every belt does the exact same thing on me...so I know it's not the belt, but me. My reality ;-)

  10. That's awesome that the belt fits as much as it does. But what a shame that it didn't stay in place.

    1. Well, it did stay in place when I rotated it around with the pockets in the back...and just left it on my waist (instead of battling with it to stay low on my hips). I'm going to play around with how tight I wear it...maybe I didn't have it tight enough (?)

  11. I am always looking for a new belt to carry my stuff when I ride. My problem is that I want my iPod with me!

    1. Do you have an arm band for your iPod? I have a Shuffle, and it clips to wherever I choose to put it (usually on the hem of my shirt or waist band of my shorts/leggings).

  12. Belts are tough for me. I tend to find the ones that are wider and flatter stay low on my hips better than ones like this.

    1. I also tried a HipSister...I liked it for all the stuff it could carry....but same thing....it shimmied up to my waist (just like everything else). I still use it sometimes, but I just have to always put it under my shirt (and on my waist)

  13. I have a love hate relationship with m belt - sometimes I love it and then there are times when it drives me crazy! lol I actually just bought one in the Dollar Spot at Target.

    1. I sometimes have the love/hate thing, too. Like was mentioned above, I think it depends on what I wear the belt with.....some fabrics allow it to "cling" and stay in place better than others

  14. I agree there are factors to consider...like the "slippery" material ;-) Also, I think if you have too much stuff in the pocket(s)(or in just one and not the other), that will affect how the belt sits or stays.

  15. great review! I enjoyed trying mine out too and it does want to settle at my waist but then not move from there. I think the water proof part is a huge asset so I will keep in my arsenal :)

  16. Love this belt has zippers!
Ihave a flipbelt and although I like it, it doesn't have zippers and even if nothing has fallen out in the past, the worry has always been in my mind.
