Whiplashed by the Weather

…and just like that, the weather is “whiplashing” us back to realty.

We still haven’t had much for precip in my area, and I’m totally good with that. This week did see some crazy cold conditions, though. Need I mention the wicked wind?

Next week’s forecast is showing those arctic temps continuing, so lucky us! It’s a good thing I’m #IowaTough and have the gear to show for it.

Before I delve into the deets from of the week, welcome to the Weekly Run Down!

I love hosting this link-up with Deborah (from Confessions of a Mother Runner)! If you write a fitness-based blog, you're invited to join the party. The link-up opens at 8:00AM (EST) on Sundays and remains open through noon on Monday. We love reading about everyone's weekly fitness endeavors, training highlights (or low lights) and race recaps. We ask that you link back to both hosts, and we encourage you to read/comment on the other linked blog as well...please don't link-drop & dash ;-)

Anyways, here’s what went down in my little world of winter whatnot…

Sunday was a cold one…
The morning was looking super chilly, so I started the day on the bike with 15 miles, then layered-up for a 2-mile walk afterwards. It was a great day to stay inside, so I did just that after returning home.

Never miss a Monday
In keeping with the cold, my early morning motivation kept me inside. I knocked-out 50 flights on the steps and saved the run for the evening (in hope the full moon would be visible; see below).

Taking things easy on Tuesday
Nothing super grandiose for the day. I did some upper-body work in the morning, and got out for a 2-mile  post-workday walk later in the afternoon.

Wednesday took a nosedive with the temps…again
There was apprehension about the arctic tundra-like temps, but we all agreed to just go for it. We even had a fourth gal join us! Thankfully, the wind wasn’t too fierce but those single digit temps are gonna feel cold no matter what. Maybe that explains the negative splits?

Thankful Thursday
Oof, my body was feeling fatigued come Thursday. I had ZERO issues waking up early (before my alarm, LOL!), but it felt like I was pedaling in slow-mo as I chatted with Deb. I decided to call it at 10 miles. I even skipped the Thursday night group run. Instead, I opted for a frigid 2-mile post-workday walk and a short upper-body workout at home. The temps were actually balmy, in the upper 30F range, but that feels cold when walking.

Thnx for the collage, Deb!

Finally Friday
How about some walking? Seriously, I have really missed my daily power walks! The tamps were cold, but bearable, in the early morning hours. Also, the waning gibbous moon was especially bright in the clear sky. Friday saw two miles for breakfast and two happy hour miles after work.

Stay Inside Saturday (for the most part)
Originally, there were plans to join a couple friends for a run. The forecast was showing frigid temps and insane wind, so the run didn’t happen for any of us. Instead, I layered-up and elected to do a 2-mile walk (you know, for a “warm-up,” LOL), then hit the stairs for 100 flights of cardio work. My Garmin (on the “walk” setting) showed a whopping 1/4-mile for distance. Hmmm, 100 flights (both up and down) is only 1/4-mile? I’m not sure how accurate that is, but the sweat was legit (as was the lower-body burn). I added a short upper-body session afterwards and called it good (on fitness) for the cold day.

and what’s on tap for Sunday?
The forecast is looking even colder, especially in the early hours. The odds are really good I’ll be on the bike in the morning and try to get out for a walk in the afternoon sunshine. Stay tuned!

Overall, I guess the week was alright, though a bit on the light side. Since I passed on both Thursday’s and Saturday’s running oops, the mileage took a major hit (ahem, six miles this week!), but no worries. The stair workouts made up for that (150 total flights). Walking finally saw double digits (12 miles!). Biking was low-key as well (25 miles), but #OhWell. I’m happy with the upper-body sessions, and I’m trying to work in some daily core work, so things are just fine.

In case you missed out, there was only one post this week:

In other news:

Friday Fashion Flair. After several cold and windy days, Friday blessed us with spring-like temps and oodles of sunshine. That said, it still was cool enough to warrant a colorful and cozy cowl. Besides, there’s nothing wrong with adding a little funk to a neutral-colored ensemble.

Monday evening’s full moon was a pretty spectacular sight, even if it insisted on playing a silly game of Hide and Seek. As per usual, there was a full moon run to be done, so it happened after work.

Garmin rewarded another badge this week. Logging 20 different 20-minute activities over the course of the first 16 days suits me, LOL.

So, there’s another week of fitness and fun in the vault. Brrr, it was a chiller!

Did things take a turn for the frigid in your area? Ugh, have I ever mentioned that winter is my 4th favorite season? Are you getting outside (with the proper gear and layers) or hanging indoors?

  1. Nice job on your workouts. I think it's really hard for Gamin to keep track with so many turnarounds - LOL on the map! We're expecting snow all day tomorrow and the frigid air to arrive on Monday. I'm so over the cold.

  2. Nice job getting so much variety in your workouts this week, Kim! Our weather has been up and down as well. Right now we are way down, below zero and I'm not loving it. Ha! The moon has been spectacular this week and I've enjoyed seeing the planets as well!

  3. Nice work getting everything in despite the weather. I'm still debating whether or not I'm running outside this morning. It's windy and cold! For most of the week, it was sunny, which was such a treat.

  5. OMG that 3F! That would have me sitting inside by the fireplace. :-)
I bet running in those temps is more taxing on your body - way to brave those conditions.

    1. The extreme cold is really good for “character building,” LOL. The temps were 32F Thursday afternoon…and it actually felt warm…

  6. Brrrr. It got down into the upper 40s here on Wednesday, which caused me to start my run with arm warmers. Otherwise it's been tank top weather. January is our time to shine, weather-wise... we'll be grumbling and complaining about the heat in a few months!
Lucky you have those stairs! You can get a great workout inside. And, your arms look ripped! All those upper body strength sessions are paying off.

  7. We have been much colder than our normal and the snow from 2 weeks ago never melted and has put a damper on my outdoor walks. Nice to see you back at your intense stair training

  10. Whiplash is definitely a good way to describe it! It has been so awful this winter - snowy, icy, and now today we're in the single digits with windchills in the negatives. School called off through Thursday becuse of the cold! Definitely not a good time to be training for anything!

  11. The super cold temps are just hitting us. And, I will be hitting the treadmill! How interesting that you got an additional early morning runner in your group! You are all #IowaStrong!
