Feelin' the Heat on the Street

The heat is on...and I couldn't be happier!

We had a l.o.n.g and frigid winter, and a cold and rainy spring (that wasn't a whole lot warmer than winter). At long last, it feels like summer is here. Can I get an alleluia?

But, first things first...

Welcome to the Weekly Run Down! I am so excited to host this link-up with Deborah (from Confessions of a Mother Runner). If you write a fitness-based blog, you're invited to join the party. The link-up opens at 1:00 (EST) on Sundays and remains open through Monday (noon). Please share your weekly fitness endeavors, training highlights (or low lights) and race recaps. We ask that you link back to both hosts, and we encourage you to read/comment on the other linked blogs as well.

Here's what went down this week:

Never-miss-a-Monday
It's a known fact that I love my #nevermissaMonday runs. For me, it's the perfect way to greet the new week and get a jump start on the day (especially if it's the first thing I do right out of bed). I got out for three miles on a nearby county road, as the sun was emerging. It was a near perfect run...until I got busted in a selfie pose. Don't ya hate it when that happens?

Take-it-easy Tuesday
After a mini running streak (of four days), I was ready for a low-key day. I had thought of doing some elliptical time, but decided to go for a power walk, outside, instead. After all, I've waited (and waited) so long for summer-like weather, I can save the indoor stuff for a rainy day.

Rise-and-shine Wednesday
With it being Global Running Day, you can bet your running shoes (and Garmin, if you have one) that I would be celebrating! Barb and I resurrected our #5at5 ritual (five miles at 5:00 a.m.) and were treated to perfect temps (mid-60F's)...wouldn't you smile, too?

HIIT-me-up Thursday
It had been awhile since I've taken the HIIT outdoors. With Coach Max as my witness, I knocked out 30+ minutes of sweat equity on the patio.

6 sets of:
*10 push-ups
*5 burpees
*hill sprint up/recovery jog down (on the street, approximately 150m each way)
*15 reps of arms/shoulder moves
*20 mountain climbers
*20 plank jacks

Up-and-at-'em Friday
Another beautiful day! A couple of early morning miles and all was right with my world. Seriously, I never grow tired of getting outside first thing in the morning, whether I'm running or not. The fresh air is my "coffee" of choice.

Such-a-sunny-Saturday
Again, more sunshine! A couple of solo miles, then I met up with Barb for six more. We ran some hills, and fought a strong E/SE wind. My pace was alright, but it was one of those runs that felt more challenging than it should have. Oh well, it happens. I spent a few hours doing some heavy-duty garden squats (major weed-pulling), and things (amazingly) felt better...how's that for a non-traditional post-run stretching routine?

Back-outside-in-the-sun Sunday
I got out for an easy-paced 2-mile recovery run in the (somewhat) early hours and didn't realize how warm and humid the air had gotten until I stopped to check out the random chalkboard on the college campus. I'm a strong believer in the mantra, Run Happy. I thought it only appropriate to share that sentiment with others (wouldn't you do the same?). There was also more walking (with Max and the hubby before church), and oodles of garden squats (and pulling/yanking/swearing) on tap for the afternoon (#toomanyweeds).

So, the week played out well. The change in the weather was awesome, and I'm glad I could take  most of my fitness outside! Total running miles came in at 21; walking tallied around 13. The HIIT on the patio was a fun workout...I was able to get a full-body workout with some speedwork mixed in. Win win!

In case you missed out, here's what happened on the blog this week:

In other news:
Did you catch the #FridayFashionFlair post on Insta? How do you feel about the boho style? Myself, I'm not usually a fan of it, but this floral print peasant dress caught my eye. Navy is one of those rare colors that looks good with most skin tones. It's a deep, rich color without the harshness of black. Your thoughts?

Some of you may have seen the new 'do that has rocked my world. I try to change-up my hair all the time, but I do find myself reverting back to the (somewhat) same medium-length hair. Maybe it's a comfort zone thing (?). None the less, I'm thankful I can recognize when I've become a victim of a "style rut." Stepping out of that comfort zone can be intimidating, but it's also empowering....and it's only hair! It will grow back.

I'm starting my second year as a Knuckle Lights ambassador, so I have a 10% code to share with you...BRIGHTLIGHTBRIGADE. These are pretty awesome, and so much more convenient than a headlamp. I use them a lot for my early morning runs (in the colder weather, when there's no daylight), and they are handy for walking the dog.

And, finally, did YOU celebrate Global Running Day? That's one of those "national days of" that I can totally embrace.

SO, that's a wrap on my week. How are things in your world?  Better (warmer) weather? Global Running Day antics? What would you write on a random chalkboard?

    1. ha ha, yeah, my pony tail is a wreck now LOL I usually do the messy bun thing anyways, so it's still workable.

  3. Aw, look at Max checking you're doing it right, how sweet! We've had a mix of warm sun and torrential rain this week, so it's been odd but I have got some dry runs in. Love your sunny pictures!

  4. I actually didn't run on Global Running Day, but that was because I'd run 2 days in a row already. I actually ran 4 times last week (although one was a mill quickie -- the rest were all outside!).

I'm super stoked with the weather too. We've waited a long time for this!

    1. Thanks, Friend ;-) Yes, I am one of the few who embrace all the heat (and even the humidity) of summer. I'm loving the extended daylight as well ;-)

  6. The heat hasn't really turned on here--it's actually been somewhat cool, with highs in the low 70s. This week looks to be even cooler, in the 60s. It's a very strange summer! Oh and wet!

    1. We didn't get as much rain last week as forecast, and I'm quite alright with that. I'm glad we finally have summer-like temps...as you know, the heat is my happy spot ;-)

  7. I am loving the heat! No complaints :)

I like the knuckle lights, but my one complaint is that they suck the battery life..I wish they were rechargeable instead!

    1. Be sure to checkout the Knuckle Lights website (linked above)...they have rechargeable ones now ;-) And, I am totally loving the heat, as well!!!

  13. Wow, your hair looks awesome! I'm jealous - I've spent the week on vacation and my hair is so curly when I can't style it. I spent the whole week under a running hat!! I actually didn't even know it was National Running day because we didn't have cell service, so no social media to alert me of it!

    1. Well, my natural hair is the total opposite...majorly straight and flat. Even though I like it long, my hair does look better if it's in the shoulder-length region, and especially with layers to give it some volume. Your trip looked fun!

  14. So glad you got to enjoys some great weather for a change! It was beautiful here too and I couldn't get enough. Your new cut is super cute!

  15. We finally had a great week too - more sunny day than rainy days, I'll take it! I'm not happy about the summer heat but I don't know how many more rainy days I could deal with, lol.

Of course I love your haircut! I liked your hair long but the new shorter hair really fits and frames your face so nicely!

  18. I absolutely love your new haircut! It's so cute and sassy! Our weather is certainly warmer! After a beautiful May, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, summer has officially hit. The "low" today is about 85 and we're looking at an excessive heat warning tomorrow with a forecast of 112! I knew we'd have to pay for that lovely May!

    1. YIKES! We're all joking that our recent nice weather is our reward for the cold winter and spring we've endured. Hoping this real summer stuff sticks around!

  19. LOVE your Global Running Dya hair pic and the new 'do. I'm totally with you on the "it' just hair". I go through waves of wanting to grow it out, then getting cranky with it and chopping it off. Part of me wants to get some highlights, but I'm also liking the dark. Total first world problems

  24. I love your haircut!!!

I hope you took a nap after your busy day on Saturday. I went to see my mom and we both took a long nap after lunch. Felt great afterwards! :-)

I am glad it is warming up here but hate it when it starts to rain again.

    1. I don't get too many naps. If I do try to indulge with a short snooze, it usually messes with my sleep later that evening.

  25. Love the hair! I just got mine colored darker and got it cut into a long inverted bob. I haven't worn a ponytail, other than running, since Friday1 It's crazy!

I am also so happy you've finally got that warm weather you love! You've been waiting for it forever!

  26. Cute haircut! The weather here has just been weird. Hot and humid and typical summer one day and chilly and rainy the next. As much as I prefer it to not be hot, the roller coaster has been a challenge.
