About That Sunny Sunday Run

Can we talk about a near-perfect sunny Sunday run, amidst the sunrise?

It's no secret how much I embrace my sunrise runs, and how much I love my early mornings. Now that we're on the bright side of the Equinox, the sunrises are coming earlier and earlier...and I'm over-the-moon excited about it.

Case in point, my most recent sunrise run...

There were so many good things happening during this 3-mile adventure in my running shoes. Care to indulge me, for a few minutes, while I gush about it?

First off, there was the weather. We'd just endured a challenging week of rain, wind, and unseasonably cold temps. Sunday's morning temps were borderline chilly, at that early hour, but they felt fantastic (says the gal who much prefers warm weather). There was a clear sky and minimal wind, both of which had been rare commodities recently.

Next, I'd had a real intense lower-body strength workout Thursday evening, and the DOMS had been harassing a few key muscles (I'll invite you to use your imagination on this one, LOL). My body was still a bit DOMS-laden, but my mojo was on-point.

Seriously, everything was feeling good. In fact (as seems to be the case with most recovery runs), once my feet hit the pavement, the aching muscles start to loosen up within the first 1/4-mile. This little movement worked its magic on Sunday morning as well. It was one of those runs where I really had to hold back because my legs wanted to spring into action faster than they should. Meanwhile, I just couldn't keep that sunrise out of sight...

Also, I'd just gotten a new pair of Knockaround sunglasses in the mail on Friday. As silly as it may sound, they gave me even more (imagined or otherwise) energy. Sorry, but I'm a believer in the power of fun and funky running gear (and accessories).

And, finally, the sunrise itself was so bright and full of grandeur! A lot of times, clouds add an artistic touch to a sunrise (or even a sunset), but this particular sunrise stood on its own merit. There's something about the bright sun glowing behind the silhouettes of various still-barren trees...well, it's an image that just needs to be captured.

I simply had to make a Reel (on Instagram) to document the experience HERE .

So, that's my story of how a seemingly short 3-mile run totally made my day...while much of the my town may have still been sleeping. Honestly, does it get any better than that?

Have you ever had a near-perfect run, such as this? Where the temps feel nice and the wind plays nice? And, your recovering body suddenly feels back to normal?

  1. That sunrise looks fantastic, Kim! I love that photo with the tree silhouettes.

The muscle pains from strength workouts usually disappear once I'm warmed up - but I'm wary of overdoing it. I don't want to get another Achilles injury again. It's so tricky to find the right balance sometimes!

    1. The last pic is from the bottom of my driveway...and that's what greeted me when my run started. The sunrise was just incredible <3

  3. Yes, I know those runs where everything just seems to come together magically. It's hard to explain, but you did a good job of it! We runners get it :)

  4. Yes there is nothing better than a perfect run where everything is on point. It's why we do all of the not-perfect runs to get days like these. Thanks for letting us experience the perfection vicariously.

    1. Indeed...all those not-perfect runs are payment for the magical ones ;-)

  5. That truly sounds like a wonderful run. I love when the sun is rising and you can feel the heat creep across your skin. Especially for a recovery run where everything feels creaky at the start but so amazing towards the end!

    1. Exactly!! I was expecting this run to feel a little creaky (due to the lingering DOMS), but everything felt great ;-)

  8. What a great run. And while I'm usually up before the rest of the town because of my kids...there is a secret thrill about experiencing things BEFORE the rest of the world is aware of the morning. It always feels magical and almost like this stolen, precious experience. I get that feeling a lot when we go to the lake in the summer; up with the sun and the day just has a special potential (though I would, admittedly, trade this experience for extra sleep most days because I am NOT a morning person, sadly).

    1. I agree, there is such a tranquil, precious experience being outdoors before the world wakes up around you. It's euphoric on a summer morning!

  10. I do love the sunrises! It feels like everything will be all right that day. Positive thinking. I also enjoy my runs in the morning when everyone else is sleeping.

  11. Near perfect runs come and go, and aren't always tied to the weather for me! They are very mysterious. But sunshine makes everything better, I absolutely agree -- because we don't get a lot! I did sit outside for a while after Walking Bandit yesterday just enjoying the fact that it wasn't cold. :)
