Black Friday 'Fessions



Can you believe it's that time of the month...again?

It's time to Runfess. A time to cleanse the soles, if you will, and move on to the next month in our running shoes. It's really good for the soul, as well, to come clean on a few (or several) things. After all, who needs that kind of baggage?

Here's what I'm runfessing this month...

First of all, let me weatherfess....I think I may have already acclimated to Winter (and Winter hasn't even officially arrived). Yes, ME, the gal who much prefers sweating it out in the heat and humidity of summer. A couple weeks ago, we were hit with the Arctic Blast. Our temps plummeted, much like they did 10 months ago (when the Polar Vortex smacked us). The early November temps were in the single digits (two months premature, just saying), and the crazy wind treated us to sub-ZERO feels-like weather. Since then, the temps have climbed back to the seasonal range and, dare I say, they don't feel unbearable.

Even though it's my off-season, I runfess that I think I already need some new shoes to work into the rotation. I got through all of 2019 (so far) with three awesome pairs of Brooks Adrenaline 18's. Two of them were bought a year ago, when the the 2019 model, the "19," was debuting. The third pair was bought just after the holidays, for a ridiculously great price, since it was the "previous season's" model. This third pair still has some miles left in them, but the other two pairs are getting close to retirement. I hope to score a good deal on Black Friday....

Next, I have a humble DOMSfession for you. Since I've scaled back my running mileage, I've brought back some weekly HIIT workouts. Wednesday evening, while the pumpkin pie was baking, I got busy. I created a workout utilizing a lot of lower-body moves. By the fifth set, I knew there would  not be a sixth...my form was starting to go south, and I was feeling majorly tapped out. Thursday morning's turkey trot 5K was a bit of a challenge with my DOMS-laden glutes and hammies. Although the run went well, those DOMS haunted me most of Thanksgiving Day.

Here come the DOMS...
Have you ever cut your own hair? I scissorfess that I have cut my bangs (a lot) over the years. I'm constantly changing my hair...I go from blunt cuts, to layers, to long bangs, to no bangs. Yadda yadda yadda. My bangs had grown out in recent months, and were driving my crazy, so I had been contemplating getting them shortened. On a whim, I took it upon myself to fix this frustration...and although the bangs didn't look dreadful, they turned out much shorter than I'd anticipated. Fortunately, I had a hair appointment this week, and my gal worked her magic. I was definitely ready for a change; had I not made that first move with my own scissors, I may not have ventured in this direction. Glass half full.

This isn't really a runfession, because it has happened every year since 2013, but I'm full-on committed to doing the Runner's World Winter Run Streak. I guess I could runfess that I no longer feel the need to justify why I do it. It's my off-season, after all, and I really have nothing else (running-wise) going on. Also, I'm taking part in Fit Approach's #HolidaySweat Challenge, where we're encouraged to commit to moving at least 10 minutes every day from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. How's that for a win-win?

  1. I used to cut my hair but I now have a lovely hairdresser who I trust - though we are letting my short bob grow out a bit to reflect the fact that I'm really bad at going regularly and so the back gets really messy! And I haven't acclimatised yet, over here!!

    1. I've been cutting my bangs for as long as I can remember. I know how to hold them and layer them and "texture-ize" them. I don't cut them very often, but this last week I"d had enough of the waiting-for-my-next-appointment thing LOL

  3. I purchased a pair of the 19s but they feel heavier than my 19s. I'm going to test them out on the treadmill to see if I like them. Luckily I still have a brand new pair of 18s that I can add into rotation soon.

    I'm also doing the #HolidaySweat Challenge with Sweatpink :)

    1. I'm going to buy some 19's and see how they feel. I know they have the guide rails, which will be a bit different. I might look for a pair of Ravenna's, too. I have a pair of those that I've worn for shorter runs, and they were recommended to me at a fitting by a Brooks rep at an expo.

  4. I runfess I'm going to treat myself to new shoes today! My current long run shoes have both Tokyo and London under their belt so it's certainly time! I cut a boyfriend's hair once, a billion years ago. That did not go well! Thanks for fessing up!

    1. I think my lack of fear in cutting my bangs is due to my art geek abilities...I can visualize the finished "look" and know what angle to hold the scissors, etc. It's like an art project LOL

  5. No way could I cut my own. It would be a disaster! Even on your “off” season you don’t slow down much!

    1. Well, my main goal with my off-season is to run less, but work on maintaining my endurance and strength. Trust me, I am doing less :-)

  6. I never, ever cut my own hair (even when I had bangs). Even when the bangs had grown out & looked totally weird. I leave that to professionals!

    Well, the DOMs just meant you deserved everything you ate, right?

    We're presently staring down a maybe large snowstorm Sunday - Monday. I'm grateful it wasn't Thanksgiving Day (and it can happen here).

    1. I suspected this workout would produce some DOMS, so I timed it to happen in the evening, so the DOMS wouldn't be too strong until later in the morning.

    1. Go for it and take advantage! This third pair of shoes sat in my closet until the late spring/early summer because the other two pair were still in excellent shape. I just new the model was a good fit, so I couldn't resist the great sale price :-)

    Your bangs look great( but then again your hair always looks great. You are so stylish).
    For a quick second I thought about doing the Running Streak but I realized there are already several days I know that I won't be able to get any running in) 3 of those days will be when we are going to IOWA! That's right, Operation Iowa ( from our earlier conversation) will be in effect in December! -M

  9. Well done on running a Turkey Trot with DOMS! I confess that I actually like feeling a little muscle soreness - it reminds me that I have had an intensive workout.

  10. Oh I have never cut my own hair! I would not be confident enough to do that. The Holiday Sweat should be fun see you there! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving

  11. Kim, you are brave! I have never cut my own hair. I must runfess that I have been loving running in the cool early mornings in Arizona, but now I must go home to the COLD early mornings in PA.

  12. I have cut my own hair and my own bangs. Not saying it worked out well, but I have done it. I don't change my style often, but I do like to mix up the color.

    I was going to snap up another pair of Adrenalines on sale but I guess there isn't too much point now. I'll save it for when I'm actually able to wear two shoes. Hope you find some great ones!

    1. I've cut my bangs forever (since high school LOL). I don't usually cut them very short (more of a trim), and I don't do it very often. But I'm not afraid!

  13. I'm going to attempt the run streak this holiday - haven't done in in awhile and I managed to run a couple of miles yesterday and today. Hoping I can keep it up! I feel ya about the bangs - I can never cut mine the right way when I used to have them. And I also go back and forth between bangs or no bangs.

  14. While I'm team fall/winter, I too feel I acclimatized more quickly this year. 20s wind chill hasn't meant "all the layers" and I flat out refuse to be scarf weather yet.
